Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) photographed thousands of plants; these are almost never seen from above, but rather from the side, and against a neutral background. This book featuers these images of plants. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Blossfeldt was born and lived his entire life in Germany. Although he originally intended to teach natural science, a field trip in the company of artists and sculptors led him to apply artistic principles to the study of plant life.

Georges Bataille (1897-1962) was a French writer, essayist, and philosopher whose works include "The Story of the Eye", "The Blue of Noon", "The Accursed Share", and "Theory of Religion".

Gert Mattenklott, born in Oranienburg, Germany, in 1942, is dean of philosophy and humanities at the Free University, Berlin. He is an internationally acclaimed essayist, literary scholar, and critic. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Blossfeldt is an amazing artist that anticipates a lot of our conceptions of photography as much more than a realistic approach.

1.0 out of 5 stars Icing is not the cake 7 May 2012
By DocJohn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Just received this Blossfeldt book in the mail and must say the icing is definitely not the cake! The dust jacket has beautiful reproductions of the original photographs whereas the reproductions in the book are terrible. I have a copy of the original book printed in gravure in Germany and this new version by Schirmer Art Books does not do the photographer justice. Not sure why Schirmer Art Books chose to only make a pretty cover and did not take the time to produce higher quality reproductions in the interior. Very misleading when ordering!
