I have a confession to make. I don't like fantasy. Never did as a kid, but then again I didn't like blue cheese either, until an accidental tasting a couple of years ago means I now swear by it on my pizza.

So I picked up Karl with a twinge of inborn apprehension, and was therefore even more surprised to find myself quickly immersed. A baby boy is born into the Axilion family that hasn't seen baby boys in ages. Ominous prophecies tell of big changes happening should a boy ever be born into the family. Only the grandmother is aware of the prophecies, and does what she can to keep it a secret to protect him - and herself.

It's quite an unusual story. The plot moves away from any classic path I was sure it would take. I simply couldn't guess what would happen next and that made me want to read on. I'm not even sure the good guys are that good. What a nice change in a genre that seems to follow the same recipe over and over.

"Karl - Birth of Mystery" is the first book in a trilogy and managed to catch the interest of this fantasy skeptic, so I'm definitely looking forward to the next book!

like one of the previous reviewers I also steer clear of fantasy that doesn't at least have a fairly good grounding in the real world. I like my goblins going about their business on Oxford Street as opposed to some fantastical place that the writer needs ponderous paragraphs to describe. Kettlety wisely navigates the nuances of a new world with sufficient style and without belabouring the point; the names are enough, in most cases. I'd therefore recommend this as 'fantasy for beginners', not for the style, which is professional enough, but for the setting, which doesn't hammer you over the head with the lore of the land. Let's hope he keeps it so straightforward for the second instalment.

In this first book the author introduces us to his world of Gods, Titans and Guardians of Knowledge through Zandina, one of the guardians. At the beginning of the book she is anxiously awaiting the birth of her grandson, who was never meant to survive his birth. Yet he does and as Karl begins his life there are prophecies and happenings which worry Zandina and she takes steps to prevent them with consequences.

This book is full of well thought out characters and some unexpected twists. It is an excellent introduction to Karl for whom this is merely the beginning. I would thoroughly recommend this book and I look forward to reading the next one.

Normally I don't stray into fantasy, Patrick Rothfuss being where my line is drawn.

Having been impressed by the author's other creative projects I thought I'd give this a read.

Great character development with a plot that doesn't always take you where you'd expect but delights you with each new turn.

Now I have to wait with anticipation for the next two although that always gives me the excuse to re-read as each one come out!

This is a real departure for me I usually read crime thrillers but heard this would be worth taking a look at. Kettlety has created a whole new world in such a way that it feels as if it existed forever with a well established history. A very good read, written in a style which just gets better as it goes on. Certainly kept my interest and I've just started the second book and it's even better.
