I can say without a doubt, that once you have understood the fundamentals (through other Kaplan series), this book will allow you to practice questions that are realistic to the exam, if you are aiming to score over 700.
The book goes through all of the question types you will find in the verbal or quantitative sections. So there are sections such as "seven categories of difficult critical reasoning questions" and "eight most commonly tested errors in sentence correction". The maths questions have very clear explanations with suggested strategies.
The book doesn't touch on the analytical writing assessments. I would thoroughly recommend this book as a final preparation for the GMAT, but it's not the book to start with.
I have prepared the GMAT, and I study on all kind of books, this is my ranking:
1) Manhattan, the best, expensive but really good (they normally require for exercise the official guide, so you need buy them together. (Read the free guide that they give on their site.
2) The official guide, realistic.
3) The Princeton Review, good explanation.
4) McGraw, Hill a bit too easy, but I love the 6 GMAT test.
5) Kaplan, good for the difficulty of exercise but not a good explanation. .
My counsel does not give extra time at the beginning and try only to be more precise at the beginning.
Finally, I find more exercise on Coordinate Geometry than any books have prepared me. But still nothing more than triangle.
And as you can guess I am not English.
I found that this meant that I didn't panic instinctively when I got to the harder questions - which is a big help when you're only half way through the test.
Worth getting if you feel you've got the basics cracked and want to go further.
