This book is best read in conjunction with Kantar's other book 'Modern Bridge Defence'.
All topics are discussed very clearly and comprehensively. I particularly liked the chapter on the forcing defence as I have never seen this quite so clearly explained.
All intermediate players will greatly benefit from reading this book, I highly recommend it.

Many topics clearly explained, with very nice examples to test you; some easy, some not so easy.

I am in the early stages of reading this book - having read the first one through and finding myself going back to solidify my defense. This book is equally well written and I'd recommend it to anyone serious about their game. A definite one to buy in duplicate - one for partner. Read the 'Modern..' one first although the first chapter of this one could be read anytime.

Eddie Kantar is a great teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great all around coverage of Defensive Bridge Play 21 Mar. 2006
By B. Einhorn - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The emphasis on this book is on how to think when on defense. How to think about:

- Clues from the bidding - shape and distribution of the two unseen hands.

-Clues from the opening lead - why did pard lead a suit and not another. Ex. Pard bid Spades and you supported, but he lead Diamonds. Maybe he has the unsupported Ace.

- Counting HCP

- Counting Declarers tricks - if you can see that his finesses will win you may have to take a risky action, like leading K from Kx, its your only chance. (This wouldn't work well at MPs)

Basics are covered such as:

- How to choose an opening lead , especially when to lead trump

- How declarer plans on making his contract i.e. how dummy will be used. For ruffs, for long suit establishment, etc.

- When to defend actively vs. Passively

Lets say Dummy has A Q 10 8 7 in a side suit and you lead another suit and pard wins and returns a trump. Why did he do that? Throwing away the tempo!!! Its probably becaus he has K J 9 x behind Dummy and knows declarer isn't making much in that suit and will need another source of tricks.

- How to thwart declarers plan - eliminate entries to dummy, lead trumps to cut down on ruffs, etc.

An all around great book, material clearly explained, with good examples and quizzes.

Note: Carding concentions are presented IN DEPTH in the authors other book "Modern Bridge defense".

5.0 out of 5 stars Offensive guide to Bridge Defence 10 April 2001
By SOURENDRA - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
It is a complete book on the subject. Chapters are well organised and basic principles are so licidly explained that any astute reader will be immense beneficial out of this book. The examples choosen are not only cute in a sense of its presentation but also make a most difficult thing understable so easily. It is not a book of the Intermediates rather experts could also refresh their knowledge before Championship. Quizes not only explain one particular point but also brought to the surface many other co-related issues. It is a must in every bridge players desk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stepping up your Knowledge from Elementary School to College +...... 1 April 2010

This book is a great sequel to Eddie's previous book, "Modern Bridge Defense", so if you want to upgrade yourself to the next level, then start reading, chewing and digesting it without any further delay.
All the superlatives and methods mentioned in my previous review on that book are staying high , and valid here as well.
However, a fair prerequisite for this one would be would be the previous mentioned book, read it before , as you must understand and be familiar with all the concepts on which the theory is built.
This book, like its younger brother is never boring, and compiled in a way that can be read easily,
It will take you to the next level of analyzing, thinking right and appropriate execution.
If you are looking for only 2 books that cover 90%+ of the info required at the expert level, then this should be your ultimate choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Book 22 Oct. 2013
By Bob Zakada - Published on Amazon.com

I have 3 of his different bridge defense books. I thought this one was average or just above. The suit counting and point count sections were very good. I wished it had some information about suit preference signals other than the basic. I also have his Advance Bridge Technique book which appears to be the same exact same book as his old Defense Book with a fancier cover. I have probably 10-12 of his books so I'm not biased. Both of these defense books were selected as bridge books of the year by the American Bridge Teachers' Association. They didn't point out this new book was probably just a reissue of his original defense book. I just ordered David Bird's book on suit preference signals. I will see how that turns out.
