Amazon.co.uk Review

With the Hitman series already well established, Danish developer Io Interactive are not exactly masters of the family friendly game. This latest effort is their most violent and shocking yet, as you take control of reluctant mercenary Kane and his schizophrenic partner Lynch. Neither character likes the other but for the purposes of the story they have to work together in a series of violent third person shoot outs. By default you control Kane, with the computer or another player taking on the role of Lynch. As the game progress you will also be able to recruit a team of up to eight mercenaries, with your reputation determining the quality of the personnel applying for the job. Ordering your squad around is easy enough but since any of them, particularly Lynch, can have completely different objectives to you, they won’t always take orders – particularly if they’ve taken a dislike to you already - which is a real problem when you want them to administer some first aid.

Although it is much more action packed than the Hitman games, there are obviously similarities between the two games, with highly interactive environments and multiple ways to approach any problem. One particular highlight already demonstrated involves a kidnapping at a rave with Kane & Lynch firing into the air to disperse a large crowd of dancers before engaging in a brutal gun battle with security guards, as the sound and music system continues to flash and blare. If the rest of the game is just as inventive with its scenarios then Io may well keep Kane and Lynch alive for a little longer.

This game is pretty fun, the story is well done, but the gameplay can be a bit of a pain... You will find most the time when trying to find cover the back to wall mechanic doesn't work, it's not like Gears of War where you need to push a button to take cover this game does it automatically, which can be frustrating...

There has been some false things written about this game on a few reviews, so to correct some people. You can play Multiplayer with a silver account, host your own list server and join list servers, you cannot however join/host RANKED servers as that needs gold subscription... I have been playing the game since it came out, and I'll be honest with you, at the best of time there is no servers online for either, normal or Ranked and I'm a gold account holder, so the insinuation that you must pay ÂŁ32 for Live is just silly, and would be a waste taking into consideration hardly anyone is playing anyway, the game just isn't being played.

CO-OP I can understand peoples complaints... But obviously don't realise co-op isn't online, it's offline. Yes PC has split-screen, which is why one player needs mouse and keyboard and one a 360 pad, or two 360 pads, which ever you prefer. Obviously this was a developer choice to go split screen and it stinks, especially if you have a small monitor, the other frustration you cannot get a logitech pad to work without editing the registry settings, it does work but is a pain to setup.

When you get co-op going it's pretty fun, it's a whole new story seeing the perspective of Lynch, who throughout many sections of the game is cut off, from Kane seeing his pathological episodes is pretty surreal, but fun!

This is a game that enjoys one of the most SOLID story-lines that came out of game developing in the last 3 years. Unfortunately, this was NOT enough.

You are Kane, an aged mercenary and former member of a criminal brotherhood known as The 7. The last heists failed, you get arrested and convicted - yet you are a traitor in The 7's books anyway. Having you for making off with the loot somehow, they send Lynch (a psychotic, easily distracted and pill-popping murderer) to first break you out of prison and then make sure he gets their money back. They are sure you will play ball: they have kidnapped your wife and daughter to ensure it.

Now this is a foundation to built a GREAT TPS game! Unfortunately KANE & LYNCH does not reach the top floor as the game demonstrates all the flaws of a rushed release.

The character movements feel too scripted and automatic at some places (a console left-over I guess) whereas they have to be spoon-fed detailed directions at some others. Since one cannot predict where the one or the other will occur, it will eventually get on your nerves.

The squad curse is not lifted for KANE & LYNCH either: the AI of your squad is infantile at best - but you will be thankful that your enemies do not demonstrate a higher one either!
Also, the game is pretty short: it shouldn't take you more than 7 hours on normal difficulty.

Graphically this is a beautiful game - notably though not at par with, say, CRYSIS. Keep in mind that the strength of KANE & LYNCH is its story.
The gameplay and the cut-scenes blend seamlessly and the story flows like an A-List movie. And you will definitely not get bored: from the inside of a prison, to rappelling from a skyscrapper, to escaping a packed Tokyo dance club...

Although a well developed character story and a visually well designed game, they did NOT complete their follow through!

A disappointment...

The dated graphics and physics, awkward animations, no reloading, no skill required to play and all sorts of objects inside other objects (e.g. cars half in the floor EVERYWHERE) aside:

Firstly: You need a 360 controller for co-op. Why you ask? I don't think anyone knows. Basically it means no co-op for anyone without a wired 360 controller.

Secondly: Online multiplayer. What was not menitoned anywhere, is that you have to play using Windows Live. What was also not mentioned is that only Gold members can create servers, and there are no dedicated ones like for the console version. This means that how many servers are there to play online? That's right, ZERO.

So... no co-op, and no online multiplayer for the PC versions unless you want to spend ÂŁ40 a year for live gold and then anotehr ÂŁ30 for a controller.

What a mess the PC version has turned out to be!

As villain games go, Kane and Lynch isn't bad. It's an interesting idea, and works well for what it is - you play a mercenary freed from death row, trying to reach and protect your wife and daughter at any costs. It's an over-the-shoulder game in much the same way as Gears of War is, and makes use of the cover system in the same way - but nowhere near as well. There's no button to press to take cover, for example.

The health system works in the same way as Turok, using darkening and blurring screen to indicate worsening health. It's not clear, but you regenerate quickly, so it's rarely a sticking point. The guns are nice - a good selection of sniper rifles, automatics, handguns and grenade launchers. I found the grenade launchers poor, compared to the rifles, but it's a minor complaint.

There are some great touches, like the ability to rappel down buildings, and taking on an enormous truck at one stage. The rocket launcher is single use, like Crysis, but nowhere near as satisfying - you just don't really know if it's connected with a vehicle or not.

The levels are varied, from the jungles of Cuba, to a prison break, to a Tokyo club. It's fairly simple, but tries to make use of squad commands, which doesn't really work out that well - although your team-mates are quite healthy, they aren't that great shooters, and I did most of the game without them.

As with most villain games, the ending is disappointing, to say the least. There's nothing really wrong with the game, but it simply feels unpolished, relatively quick (it's four days gaming if you play a fair bit) and unsatisfying. Not a game you'll be coming back to for more, and compared to Gears, which it seems to set itself up against, it just can't compete. Not bad for a few pounds, but it's not a keeper.
