It came in the usual packaging and the Kandle itself was neatly packed away in a little box. Inside is a small velvety drawstring case, some batteries and a little screwdriver to help open the case, so you don't have to go searching for the right size head.
In terms of use, I wasn't sure how it would fit to the Kindle. My mother has the Kindle keyboard and I wasn't clear on whether this was supposed to clip onto the Kindle itself or the case. It works well in either case. When you lift up the light, there is a recess that will slide between the case and the Kindle, with the clip on the outside of the case. This means you can't close the light, but it does the job and it seems sturdy enough to withstand any knocks it might take when in that position.
When attached only to the Kindle - if one were to slide it all the way into the clip, some of the Kandle would obstruct the top of the screen - however, the tight clip means that even if you don't slide it all the way in, it holds firm.
In terms of light, I was very impressed with the brightness. There is a slight difference between the illumination at the top and that at the bottom, but nothing major that would cause me to return the product.
I can't yet comment on the battery life, but as it comes with another set - for the 14.99 I paid, I can't complain.
A cheaper alternative to the kindle cover light that works and is reasonably attractive. Thanks Ozeri!
The unit looks well built and of good quality, matching the Kindle nicely, although it would also work with a standard book
The unit fits to the top of the Kindle with a wide clip, I have a TeckNet Kindle cover and this light clip fits nicely into a seam in the top of the cover, not sure how it would work with other covers, but it does not need much depth to get a good grip, as it is quite a strong clip.
At first I thought a light using standard AAA batteries would be better, using cheaper and easy to obtain batteries, but pleased I chose this using small CR2302 batteries, the whole unit is light weight and doesn't unbalance the Kindle. No fiddly stalk to adjust and it is not easily moved, or knocked, when fitted to the Kindle.
The light folds up to go into it's pouch and had a double hinge so that the it can be easily adjusted when fitted, but in almost any setting it gives a good, even, lighting to the Kindle screen, with no reflections. There are two widely spaced LED bulbs, which if anything, could be too bright (my other half even finds the red light on the TV a distraction at night), but the light spread can be reduced by closing the light down towards the screen.
First impressions are that this has been a very good choice, just remains to see how long the batteries last and how reliable the unit will be, although it does feel quite solid.
When I saw this dinky little light, I thought it looked great in the photo. It looks great in real life too. It is small, neat and well packaged. I like that it comes with extra batteries and it's own little screwdriver to open the battery compartment. The little LEDs in the Kandle provide enough light to comfortably read without a big spread of light to disturb my sleeping husband. The angle of the light is adjustable too and means I can lie on my side while reading as easily as sitting up.
On other reviews, it has been pointed out that if the Kandle is pushed fully onto the Kindle, it blocks the first line of text. That is true, but doesn't bother me. It's not exactly rocket science to position it correctly. The spring clip on it is strong enough that I don't think it is going to slip off.
I can't tell yet how long the battery life is going to be. I will update this review when I figure that out, but since it comes with a set in the light and a spare set in the box, it seems good value. I splashed out and bought a few packs of spare batteries while I was at it.
I should note that I have a Kindle 4, with a pretty cheap (but perfectly functional) faux-leather book-style cover. The Kandle works with and without the cover.
This light is not cheap, but nor is it madly expensive and assuming it lasts, I won't consider it a bad investment.
Update: I've actually bought 3 of these at this stage, which tells you how much I like them. My original one is still working fine, the others are for friends. Batteries last well and the light is still working, a year and a half later. And the price has gone down so an even better buy.
