The lock is intended to mount to the frame to lock the rear wheel and provide D bar stowage, as others have perhaps over-emphasized, its not intended for locking to street furniture. However I've combined it with a flexible steel cable so I can use that secondary option too. The D bar provided is a 10mm diameter hardened steel anti-cut anti-twist design with a 1mm thick plastic cover (total 12mm not 14mm!).
The lock mount will fit up-to a 36mm diameter frame though was a little too big for my 28mm one so I had to pad the frame with vulcanizing rubber tape, it could fit larger frames by simply using longer M6 bolts. The D bar internal width is 41mm so check your tyre width is less than that, the 140mm internal length should be plenty.
ALARM: The alarm is LOUD (110dB) and unfortunately the setting/un-setting 'chirps' are at the same volume, which I find uncomfortable. You can use the lock without the alarm though by simply reversing the D bar. I have had no 'false alarms' as you have to knock the bike fairly hard to trigger it, though the lock is much more sensitive to any interference to itself. If the alarm is triggered it initially makes three loud 'chirps' and goes into super-sensitive mode, thereafter the slightest movement sets off a continuous 10 second burst of noise. Its nice to note it would be very difficult to muffle the alarm as the sounder is protected.
LOCK: Has a ice-spray proof, pick proof & anti drill lock with a special semicircular key, unlike the easily picked round key lock found on many D locks.
As this lock is resistant to many common methods of attack I`m happy it provides a good deal of protection that I see too many others fail on.
Yes another lock is required (preferably a cable) to then secure you bike to where every you want but this is intended as having a D-lock and and cable lock together greatly increases the security of the lock, and makes is much harder to steal. Most people who have a moderately expensive bike will use two locks.
If you are locking for just one large D-lock your bike to something then this lock will not be for you. All though it will not be as secure and someone can steal your wheels without having to break the lock.
Spare (previously uncuttable) Kabrus keys can now be cut by Timsons "specialist key department" up in the midlands..
The chap in charge is Terry Power 0161 946 6231 & he is currently seeing if he can roll the blanks out to all Timpsons shops.
He has just cut me some spares for a Kabrus 802 using cut down Honda blanks & they work just fine.
The alarm on the other hand is really loud and good, I've not had any false alarms in all the time I've had it (approx. 1 month), so don't worry about the wind or anything else setting off the alarm.
