The book is consistent; on each double page, it provides a list of associated words/phrases together in an easy to read list which is not too long (and therefore not too daunting) and then provides two exercises - a test yourself from Spanish to English, followed by English to Spanish. This format doesn't change throughout the book, though there are some pages at the back which are well laid out for extra Spanish vocab you learn in class.
The computer program is very similar, except it is a little more interactive and doesn't allow for cheating. It works well alongside the book, and the male Spanish voice used to pronounce the words speaks with an evident but clear and well enunciated accent.
Arguably the best feature is that you can create your own audio track for each topic which contains your selected vocabulary in both English and Spanish (in the order of your choice) which means that you can download the vocabulary to your phone/mp3 player and revise on the go - an excellent way of learning the correct pronunciation of the words.
This is definitely purely for learning vocabulary at a KS3 level - you learn what words mean, but not really where your would put them in a sentence. There's no other way of revising vocabulary than sitting and applying yourself to the words, and this is a helpful tool to facilitate that, though it's probably not appropriate for children with a short attention span.
Overall, I thoroughly recommend this CGP tool - as always , they come up with the goods and offer great value!
If you are looking for something to help connect vocabulary into basic sentences to help build conversational Spanish or Listening skills then this isn't the choice to make as it is simple single words with only the odd change for say 'what time is it?' or 'de nada' which basically means 'it is nothing' but in Spanish is the expression for "you are welcome".
The book has all the vocab on the DVD but a double spread of 'tests' which are only usable for independent learning if the vocab box is covered! Surely a better format could have been considered here? It's great if you are revising in pairs to check each other but not for lone revision.
The DVD is pretty good, the help has a great screen mirrored run through showing how to get the most out of it. The big downside is that some DVDs are incompatible with Macs, if you are unlucky please email the friendly CGP customer services and a replacement will be popped in the post, mine arrived the next day.
The vocab is presented by topics and subtopics with a male and female voice, options of checking off words you know and creating tests on each topic with either written or audio stimuli and then type the answer in English or Spanish. This typing concept is ok but will probably frustrate those with poor spelling retention or dyslexia.
There is also the option to create a .wav file to use with a music player, however as .wav is an uncompressed format it won't play on some players and in say the car if burnt to a cd so you may need to use iTunes to convert to .Read more ›
First; the initial DVD ROM didn't work on our MAC computer despite the packaging saying it was both MAC and Windows compatible. However I sent a quick email to CGP and they sent me a new DVD ROM free of charge in the next post. This one worked fine!
The DVD consists of a fairly large number of vocabulary list, which you can hear spoken. You can also choose whether to have the English translation present or not, and can tick whether or not you know that piece of vocabulary. You can also test yourself on the vocabulary (unfortunately only written, or from hearing the Spanish and writing the English, its not able to score your pronunciation). This does include though needing the correct accents.
Overall a good aid to learning KS3 Spanish.
Looking at the Vocab book first – this is matched to the digital Vocab Tester, so you can make lists to test yourself and hear how every word in pronounced. Each page has lots of space to test yourself. For example, there is a page of words for the months of the year, with the Spanish words on the left and the English on the right. Then you can test yourself from Spanish to English and English to Spanish. A useful cardboard bookmark/strip is included, to cover up words and allow you to test yourself.
The DVD-Rom gives a useful pronunciation guide, allows you to make your own vocabulary lists and even allows you to create audio files for your mp3 player. With over 500 words, this includes all the vocabulary you need for KS3 and is a very useful package. Used alongside the Study and Workbook, these are ideal revision aides.
