CGP produce some really good workbooks, always of a high standard, and this is one of a series
called "SAT Busters" which cover all the various parts of the curriculum your child will need for their Year 6, KS2, SAT exams in both English and Maths. This book covers the important skill of Mental Maths. It is a simple book, in black and white, and makes up in substance what it lacks in style. There are sections on Number Problems, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Mixed Calculations, Doubling and Halving, Rounding and Estimating, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals, Units and Measures, Time, Shapes, Angles, Ratio and Proportion and Algebra. There are also four Practice Tests. The answer sheets are in the book and you can either read the questions aloud from transcripts included in the book or download the audio tests online (details are in the inside cover).

The only reason I have dropped a star from my review, is that the answers are not included. Admittedly, you probably will not need them for this age group and they are included in a separate answer book which covers three workbooks, "KS2 Maths SAT Buster Answer Book (Number, Shape, Measures and Data, Mental Maths)", but it is much easier/quicker to have the answers included and, although the answer book is not expensive, it is still annoying to have to purchase it separately. Overall, though, this contains a lot of questions and covers all the important areas of the maths curriculum on which they will be asked.

This is a very good workbook for KS2. My son is partway through KS2 and has been helped by this book, although obviously parts of the book are of no use yet as he has not studied those topics. The good thing is the book is split into clear sections, so you can pick and choose and start where you want. I get him to write his answers down in a blank notebook, so that we can come back again to those questions he has problems with. (This also means I can use this book with my daughter when she starts KS2 in September).

The audio files for the practice tests (on the CGP website) are really good, they are authentic-sounding test recordings and will let the child practice in a test-like environment. If that is too formal you can also read out the text yourself.

One major niggle is the lack of answers. OK, so the maths is for primary kids and not terribly difficult, but it would have been so much better not to have to calculate everything yourself to check whether the child has got it right or not - supremely annoying and a bit of a time-waster. How hard could it be to include an answer sheet?!

This book contains lots of mental maths questions to help prepare children for the new SAT's curriculum. The book covers all the main areas of maths: number problems, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, mixed calculations, doubling and halving, rounding and estimating, fractions, percentages and decimals, units and measures, time, shapes, angles, ratio and proportion, and algebra. There are also 4 practice tests included which come with a script for an adults to read or you can access the questions read out online. As it is just the questions without guidance or explanations, it would be best used as extra practice alongside the CGP SAT's Revision Book. The answers are not included with this book which is a negative.

As usual with CGP books, this is a very competent study aid. It isn't very large - I'd like to see them produce a weight tome of practice questions - but it is very focused and relevant. My year 5 daughter has been working through this, and the more she practices, both at school and at home, the less scary the whole testing process is becoming. The downloadable audio files are a nice touch, again reducing the scariness of the process.

You need another book for the answers, although most parents should be able to mark these without reference to it.

There is a 3-pack available - this book, Number and Mental Maths - which represents a saving from buying the three individually.

Overall, another decent practice book from CGP. A bit thin, but with high quality content.

Mental maths is so important for my sons age group and I felt that not enough time was being spent reinforcing it at school. The book appeared to tick all the boxes, nicely laid out and easy to follow not just for him but for me.
I was surprised no answer sheet came with it, or am I missing something?

Maths has changed somewhat in the years since I was my sons age so this has also been a learning experience for me though luckily the school has had some parent evenings and workshops to help us get to grips with how things are done now.

Working out the answers was no great ordeal and helped brush aside the cobwebs. Now that there have been so many changes to the curriculum and there is a new emphasis on mental maths there is no harm in using resources such as these.

Just practice in bite sized chunks to keep it fun so it doesn't become onerous.
