Product Description

KLOO, winner of the "ToyTalk Best Board and Card Game 2011", has turned learning a language into a game. Players make sentences and learn words in a foreign language to score points. The longer the sentence and the more words you learn, the faster you can power your cars around the special "Race to Madrid" game board. Compete, race and overtake - KLOO makes learning a language fast, easy and a lot of fun. But there is no need to be a language expert - you can start playing KLOO as an absolute beginner - just be ready for how fast you pick up the language! Within a few games players can effortlessly learn hundreds of words and make tens of thousands of sentences. Using coloured cars to keep score, players speed through the great cities of Spain in a race to the capital. The game board shows genuine pictures of cultural sites and places of interest in each city. Extra game board rules spice up the fun. The four decks of KLOO cards contain useful Spanish words for making sentences about "Eating & Drinking", "Clothing ", "Places" and "Everyday Objects". Once players know all the words in one deck, they move on to the next one. In a short time players learn to make thousands of Spanish sentences. KLOO is suited for children and adult learners at pre-intermediate stages as well as a fun resource for school. KLOO was designed by games experts, tested by teachers, manufactured in the UK and launched in the autumn of 2010. In March 2011 KLOO became an instant classic when it won the "Best Classic Toy" at the 2011 Dr Toy Awards in the USA. In the UK KLOO won the ToyTalk Best Board Game of the Year. In 2014 KLOO won the prestigious Academics Choice Award. The game comes complete with Quick Start Rules, 4 decks with different words, a folded "Race to Madrid" game board and coloured Racing Car pieces.

I have now played a few 30-40 mins games with my friends and overall it went down very well. I have several comments, none negative, which I will outline below.

I found playing with a score board infinitely more fun than paper and pen. I would definitely recommend the "Race to Madrid" board. It gives a much more complete experience.

I love board games and card games and regularly review games for another website. I am always on the look out for decent educational games as they are a difficult nut to crack. The holy grail for educational games is what could be called the "Golden Triangle" - was it fun? was it accessible? and was it educational?

Fun? Everyone enjoyed it. No one left frustrated, bored or confused. First hurdle was most definitely leapt over with ease.

Accessible? We played with 2 people who had GCSE Spanish, 2 people at beginner level, and one person who had no background in Spanish whatsoever. Everyone did well and no one felt out of their depth - even the person who had never learnt any Spanish previously.

Educational? There was a definite trend of people translating more and more words as we went on. By the end nearly every word in the sentences played were translated and the pot of "untranslated" words diminished. The bloke who knew no Spanish at the start successfully translated complete sentences at the end of the game. So another success.

So overall it hits all 3 important aspects of an educational game. I am delighted to see as accomplished a game as this one. Not many educational games manage to hit all 3 so it is a real joy to find one that does.

Also we played a variation with which you separated the Red verbs from the rest of the deck and every player picked one red at the end of their turn and filled the rest of their hand with the other colours. This meant that everyone always had a starter card and more sentences flowed out. This will make more sense when you buy it!

I first bought the French version 'Race to Paris' for a friend with a house in France, and, after getting a text message from his partner one day saying that they had just played it and it was 'the best present ever', I decided to get the Spanish version for my family. I am a teacher of French, German and Spanish, and am always on the look out for language-learning games. My younger daughter had just started GCSE Spanish, my older one had beginners' level and my husband hardly a word! We played this just before a holiday to Alicante and it was excellent. It was really good fun whatever anyone's level and people picked up vocabulary and were able to make sentences really quickly. I would love to see this available in more languages and levels. One thing that is also really good is the flexibility to just get packs of cards or to go for the full board game straight off or to add the board at a later date - it makes it ideal for a range of budgets, and I was able to just get a pack of cards for a friend's son for Christmas. I think it is brilliant.

The easiest way to learn a new language is to make it fun so you learn with minimal effort & without realising how much you're learning. I purchased the KLOO Race to Madrid board game & found it to be useful for expanding my vocabulary as well as improving my approach to putting sentences together. If we'd had these at school I'd have learnt a lot more in language classes!! Purchasing the board game was better value for money than buying the cards on their own, and is easily worth the extra few £££'s as it helps bring the cards to life. The variety of games you can play with KLOO is impressive & the quality of the cards, board game and cars that come with the board game is very good, they are very durable (important if using KLOO with children!) and not in the slightest way cheaply or poorly made as some board games can be. Highly recommended product.

We played it as a family (my husband who has never done spanish, my eldest son 10yo and middle one 7 yo both beginners too and myself who did spanish at school in France). We had some fun! My eldest son got really into the game (he's very competitive) so he coped very fast that translation will get him moving faster in the race so he made sure to check all the cards and remembered most of them!!!! my husband was saying the words very accurately thanks to the phonetics. My middle one who was a bit slower to play as he's only 7 so not up to scratch with the reading yet, was very strong at remembering the vocabulary!
But the most amazing thing was this morning! I came down saying " i smell coffee" in spanish as a joke so we all started saying other things we remembered from playing yesterday and we were all amazed on how much we did!!!! It was our first night playing the game and one deck!!!!
the kids are mad to play again tonight!!!!
So i'm very grateful for this game as it is working and in such a fun and clever way!!!!

Really educational and fun game. Great way to learn a language without feeling like you are studying. We play with 2 x adults (one with v rusty school level Spanish, one with no previous Spanish) and 2 x 6 year olds (both of whom can read well in English, though completely new to Spanish) and it has been a big hit! This deal is better value than you may realise, since you don't need to buy any of the accompanying Kloo cards (both card packs - ie all 4 decks - come as part of this offer. Highly recommended!
