From the Manufacturer
‘Of all art, music is the most indefinable and the most expressive, the most insubstantial and the most immediate, the most transitory and the most imperishable. Transformed to a dance of electrons along a wire, its ghost lives on. When KEF returns music to its rightful habituation, your ears and mind, they aim to do so in the most natural way they can … without drama, without exaggeration, without artifice.' Raymond Cooke, KEF founder

High Resolution Sound by KEF
The unique technologies that underpin KEF’s passion for creating the most natural possible sound immerse you in the intense clarity and detail of the piece played live: vivid, spacious and exquisitely balanced.
Sweet, natural and beautifully balanced, KEF’s 40mm neodymium driver is tuned to deliver full range high definition response from 20Hz to 20kHz. Half the weight of conventional copper wire, the copper-clad aluminium wire voice coil improves HF response to enhance musical subtleties and detail. Each aperture in the tuning plate mounted over the drive unit in the acoustic chamber is precisely positioned to optimise clarity, dynamics and bass weighting. Opera or hip-hop, on the move or just chilling, you make the most of every note.
Precision engineered in aluminium alloy and incorporating KEF’s multi-directional Smart Hinge, the sturdy, lightweight frame securely locates each ear cup in the right position. Memory foam in the breathable ear pads moulds itself to the shape of your ear for a perfect fit, maximising bass performance and letting you listen in complete comfort for as long as you like.
Thanks to KEF’s unique multi-directional Smart Hinge, the lightweight aluminium frame automatically conforms to the shape of your head, sitting neither too tight nor too loose, and folds up neatly afterwards. Together with the overall lightness, the breathable and sweat-resistant memory foam ear pads and headband feel naturally comfortable, even for long periods.
An acoustic sealing ring in each ‘racetrack’ ear cup provides an excellent seal that cuts out extraneous noise while minimising sound leakage. All you hear is your chosen track in its purest form, while those around you hear virtually nothing. KEF headphones are designed to comply with the CENELEC standard EN60065/A12 for protection against excessive sound pressure.
Fits all Your Devices
Compatible with most smartphones, computers and other mobile devices. Featuring an integrated in-line microphone and remote control on a tangle-free flat cable for iPhone and other Apple products, it allows you to operate the play functions or switch between calls and music. Just plug in and relax for First Class entertainment. When finished, store your M500s in the hard case included.

For a long time I've been looking for a foldable closed headphones that sounds fantastic and is easy to carry around for my travels.
The KEF M500 has everything I need. First of all, it sounds great in all genres. I've tried pop, rock, classic, jazz, heavy metal, opera, and it handles everything well. The sound is much more open and natural than other closed headphones I have tested, it's quite neutral with a little tilt up in the upper bass and a little down in the upper treble, just enough to make it sound bigger than it is, and avoid any harshness of any kinds in the treble. There's a great "room feel" in the sound, to make it sound like floorstanding speakers, they almost rival my PSB Synchrony Two in sound quality.
Here's a list of closed headphones (not all foldable) I've had or heard in my search before purchasing the KEF M500:
Beyerdynamic DT770 (32/80 Ohm)
Martin Logan Mikros 90
My old reference are the Denon AH-D2000, which I own for a couple of years. The KEF M500 are first of all much more smooth than the Denons. Songs that have a tendency to sound harsh in the treble are smooth in the KEF M500. The bass which is one of the strong points in the Denons, is no match to the much faster and precise bass of the KEF M500, the Denons bass sounds boomy in comparison.
The KEF M500 are not perfect, but they are the closest thing to perfect in my ears I have heard so far. Combining that with excellent comfort and a nice small foldable design (including case) with excellent build quality, the search is over...
PS: An iPod Touch fit in the case together with the headphones + cables.

This is KEF's first stab at a headphone, and very good it is too.
Price point if around the £250 mark which puts it up against the benchmark in this area, the Sennheiser Momentum, themselves an amazing headphone that turns audiophile heads.
So, what does your money get you? Firstly, the KEF is well packaged, the box has a magnetic-closure opening flap that gives info on the cans. Open the box up and the cans are encased neatly in their lovely zip-up, semi-hard case. A previous reviewer compared the case as being like a large sunglasses case, a fair and accurate comparison. Everything feels pretty high grade at this point but one detail lets it down, the case sits in a cheapo plastic tray within the box. The Momentums rest in regal fashion in a die cut foam interior, probably more expensive to make but so sweet looking.
Anyway, nothing to freak out about, the cans themselves are the main attraction here, not the box. So, inside the zip-up case we have the cans themselves, two flat tangle-free cables (one with microphone and volume switch for iphone use), a 6.5mm adaptor and an in-flight adaptor. The package all fits in the case very neatly.
The cans themselves are very nice looking, made from brushed aluminum and black pleather. Opening removing them from the case the smart hinges unfold and the cans pop into place.Read more ›
Comfort. You need to position the phones correctly to ensure comfort over a 2-3 hour listening session, otherwise the pads seem to press against prominent parts of the ear and cause discomfort almost like a burning effect. I have written to KEF and asked whether the pads could be offered in lambs leather like the B&W P5 which seem during my brief trial to be comfortable on the ear. It is possible to walk around with phones on, but I doubt that they would stay in place during jogging. I suspect that head size may be quite a driver in whether true comfort is achieved. I do believe that they have become more comfortable after my two months of use. I am now sorry to have to take them off to get on with other things in my life! But would I wear them on flight over six hours, possibly not, I’d use the PX200i’s for that as you don’t know you have them on.
Design. I like the way the phones fold flat which allows me to carry them easily in my bag to and from work. I also store them flat in a drawer to avoid naughty cats chewing cables. (The Momentums were on my initial shopping list until I realised the inability to fold for travel). They seem very well made, almost indestructible and very light to wear. However I have read that screws can come loose and they are apparently Torx T5. Because the phones are designed to be used with Apple devices the inline remote works whether plugged in to my rMBP or iPhone. They also match the design of the MacBook in materials which is rather nice and not a piece of plastic on view. Great idea the flat cord, does not seem to tangle at all.
