I first read Ties that Bind ( Detective Madison Knight Series Book 1) the first book in this series. Whilst I enjoyed the book sufficiently to then buy this one, I did have a few reservations about it, but I am so glad that I didn't let that stop me buying this. I found this one thoroughly enthralling and sought out as many opportunities to read it as possible. I found the interactions between the characters quite credible, although I am not sure how long Madison would get away with punching Terry in real life. It does, however, give a flavour of the banter between them. Madison Knight appears to be quite a complex character and I am not sure that she fully understands herself; I suspect there are underlying issues which will come to light in subsequent books. Her personal life is a bit of a mess, mostly because she can't quite decide what she wants from it but her job is all consuming for her and she appears unable to understand why anyone would want more from life. People who make the point that they have a life outside of work irritate her, mostly because she doesn't really have one and because she feels that by saying so they are saying that their lives are better or more important than hers.
From having few suspects in this murder, the team ends up with more than they can count. It is a cleverly constructed investigative narrative, with ups and downs, and unusually for this genre of books, a good reliance on forensic evidence which eventually leads them towards the right person but only through a series of other people.
This is a good read which doesn't give away its secrets too easily, leaving the reader looking for more and pretty much unable to get ahead of the author.

The poor dog!

This author writes a good book, storyline, characters and writing - all good. I enjoyed reading the book....except for the storyline about the dog. The main character is given a Labrador puppy (by someone who should know better, frankly) and then leaves it in her apartment alone whilst she works. She starts work early and prides herself on working late into the evening, and then gets angry when the dog messes or chews a table leg. A brief mention of sending it away to be trained isn't enough, what she was doing amounts to cruelty. She didn't want a dog, she shouldn't have accepted the dog.
I would love to read the other books in this series, but I won't because this annoys me so much, sorry.

I really didn't like the main character Detective Madison Knight. How anyone could work with her I don't know.
Her one saving grace was that she didn't give up when on the trail of the murderer and was prepared to work all hours to solve the crime. With plenty of suspects she worked tirelessly to find out who had killed Claire Reeves who also wasn't particularly likeable but who didn't deserve to die. A good book which kept me guessing until the end.

Erratic, really irritating heroine, very unrealistic almost instant forensic results, no police procedures and few other fellow police even mentioned. All in all not very realistic. Read the first book and got bored with the stupid antics of the characters but as the writer seemed popular got the second book. Comparing these with other writers of police series is an insult to the other writers.
