Review

"Scarily believable" (Essentials)

"Fiendishly addictive as well as perceptive about guilt and social class" (Guardian)

"A pacy psychological thriller that perfectly captures the voice of a stressed-out working mum" (Sunday Mirror)

"With cracking dialogue, compelling characters and a page-turning plot…this is a truly promising debut" (Daily Mail)

"With cracking dialogue, compelling characters and a page-turning plot about every mother's worst nightmare - the abduction of a teenage daughter - this is a truly promising debut by Daly. She writes with a singular voice and a fierce passion that roars off the page, while also displaying a visceral understanding of the betrayals and humiliations of domestic life ... With a sharp, double-twist ending, it announces Daly as a potential star, and one with the courage to take risks" (Geoffrey Wansell Daily Mail)

A good, fast read, I really enjoyed this and would have read it a year ago but for the absolutely ridiculous title that kept putting me off.

I liked the characters, apart from the female detective - I appreciate that most crime authors try (almost too hard) to give their detectives an edge; but this one went the other way and she was just dull. She didn't get anything right either and was handed the perpetrator on a plate. I thought I had it all sussed out as to who was guilty, but was completely wrong. I can imagine a lot of people relating to various characters and the writing was good and flowed well, though I did find it annoying when the writing switched to the 3rd person, despite Lisa (who most of the book was written by in the 1st person) sometimes being in the scene.

If you have a long journey or hospital stay coming up this is the ideal book.

Couldn't put this down, not read a book as good as this for a while and didn't want it to end. This appealed to me as it is set in the Lake District which I am familiar with as we stay there twice a year for a holiday so it was good to hear all the places mentioned, even Booths!

It kept you guessing right till the end and you didn't know which way it would go. Felt it was a little rushed at the end as I would have liked to have read a bit more about the kidnapper and the two girls but nevertheless this was a fantastic story and had me gripped right to the end.

It was good to read about Lisa's work too in caring for animals and how hard she worked and also an insight into the life of DC Joanne Aspinall, although not quite sure why her wanting a breast reduction was ever mentioned.

Was also good to read a book without any typos and bad grammar.

Highly recommended and can't wait for the next.

A good story that makes you realise do you really know people as well as you think you do. Some good twists towards the end that I didn't see coming. A story, that as a parent, will send shivers up your spine.
