Unfortunately, the software it chooses to use is Mobipocket eBook Creator - Windows-only - so if you're buying this (and it's well worth the thrifty price even for its basic information), don't expect to be able to produce your own ebook if you're a Mac user.
It is confusing at times, for instance saying it's necessary to include an NCX file to have a 'well-formed' book, then saying the NCX file is not included when uploading to Kindle Direct Publishing; giving "chapt1" as an example, and a couple of lines later referring to "chap1".
Some proofreading would have been helpful for the reader who's new to the subject; there are misspellings and misnamings (Mobipocket eBook Creator is called either Mobipocket Creator or Mobipocket Creater throughout). Some instructions are just baffling ("5. Insert anchors bookmark anchors").
But as a quick introduction to the general principles of how an ebook is made, it's worth the money and well recommended.

BUY THIS BOOK.
The author is extremely responsive to questions. And he is very knowledgeable about the process of publishing books for the kindle.

Using the examples on how to edit the ncx and opf files I am able to get the navigation controls to work, where pressing the arrow keys will move you from chapter to chapter. That is very helpful.
I have not yet figured out how to get the guide items work, where the book will automatically start at the first chapter and the Table of Content control will work. I've give this a great deal of research and cannot find an answer that works. This book does not tell you how to do that.
