I read some of the reviews on amazon.com. Nobody has written anything here yet, so here goes. This is an amazingly funky and upbeat Steve Winwood album. It's lighter in it's approach than much of what he has done earlier.
If you are a fan of the quirkier, proggy 70s version of Stevie then perhaps this album will be lost on you. However, if you think that this is uncharasteristic for him you are wrong. This is the 90s version of "Back in the high life". Also a brilliant album.
The 1st impression I had when listening to this was that I felt it was too "poppy". But it grew on me pretty quickly. Usually music grows on me from the other side (losing it's complicatedness gradually). This album's lighter feel is much due to producer Narada Michael Walden and he has done a very good job.
The R&B roots of Stevie as well as his sheer musicanship along with Narada Michael Walden's modern Motownesque production makes for a brilliant musical experience.
Best performances are "Spy in the house of love", "I just wanna have some fun" and the incredibly funky "Let your love come down" (you just wanna get up and shake to that one!)
The other songs follow that mood and quality if perhaps sometimes a bit sparse on arrangements and a slightly restrained. I have a feeling some of the songs would come to life done live.
Enjoy!

What a great cd by the soulman the whole album is just quality serious songwriting and masterful playing of instruments, everything sounds just to good right down to the production.
This album dates back to 1997 and the style on a few tracks sounds dated ,but the quality is just superb making this music timeless and good fun,two tracks stood out for me when I played it in the car at a high volume,"just wanna have some fun" and "Let your love come down" crisp soulful vocals and brass licks and awesome well played deep bass lines really drive these tracks making the dynamics of the music stand out, a great musical experience you not only hear but feel the music, there are also some good soulful ballads in the mix making a great balanced album.
Real music is sure in this soul house just turn it up!.

When released in 1997, this album did not fly off the shelves and received mixed reviews from the music press. A common criticism was that producer Narada Michael Walden's influence was too overbearing. Winwood was seen by some as being washed out as a solo artist and this album was too similar an effort to his previous release "Refugees Of The Heart", the sales of which were disappointing when compared to "Roll With It" and his most commercially successful album "Back In The Highlife".

"Junction Seven" has a dominant R&B theme throughout and is mix of intantly catchy songs, eg. "Spy In The House Of Love" and growers such as "Real Love" and "Plenty Lovin'". However, the real gem is Winwood's cover of Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair"; worth the price of the album alone.

That voice...that sound....
You listen to musical history when you hear Winwood. I'll spare you the education on the basis, you either know already or you really ought to.

In truth, I am not overly keen on this as an album, yet I took a long time to discover such.
On hearing ANGEL OF MERCY, I was captivated and would have taken "BOILED BEEF & CARROTS" rhymed on spoons from Mr W and still loved every second. Said ANGEL brings Winwood back to the epitome of his 80's/90's (HIGHER LOVE) era. The omnipotent deep throated "yowl" of Hammond slides from the belly of a Leslie is nothing short of intoxigating.
Well beyond the heady pioneering days twenty years before, he was then seeking a deeper more mature direction. At the time perhaps, but closing of the 20th centurn proved to have little of the durability its early promise may have suggested. As such beneath the gloss it sounds a tad cliched.
To criticise one of the Gods of rock'n'roll-with-it is to walk on very thin ice, but I will say that just four tracks make this album essential for me and the remainder I can easily pass over.
I feel there is very little wrong with this album, but I was looking for something monumental and probably just set my expectations a little too high. More attention needed on the writing to justify the brilliance of the playing.

Steve Winwood at his soulful best. Not a dud track on the album. Great version of 'It's a Family Affair'. Another gem from Mr Winwood

Not classic Winwood by any means, but this R&B flavoured album from 1997 is pleasant on the ear and a worthy addition to any Steve Winwodd collection. The CD contains a good cover of Sly & The Family Stone's Family Affair.

I completely missed this when it came out. It is not one of his best albums but I have yet to come across any of his that I did not like. This is typical Stevie, lovely voice, excellent tunes, wonderful musicianship.
