Product description

Product Description

In his 66th year, the great saxophone player from Memphis, Tennessee, is making vital, urgent new music with his new quartet. It's a strong band - with prize-winning pianist Geri Allen, bassist Robert Hurst (best known for his work with the Marsalis Brothers, with Tony Williams and Steve Coleman), and up-an-coming young drummer Eric Harland (who has already played with McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders and Ravi Coltrane).

As so often with Lloyd, the musical territory traversed is vast, moving in and out of "jazz". The album - his 11th for ECM - begins with a 14-minute meditation on Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" (made famous beyond France by Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone and others in the English version "If You Go Away"), and also includes Duke Ellington's beautiful ballad "Come Sunday".

The other songs are Lloyd's, among them "Sweet Georgia Bright", a tune featured on his very first album as a leader "Discovery", made in 1964. "The Sufi's Tears" features Lloyd on the tarogato, exploring Middle Eastern sonorities, while "Both Veils Must Go" is a sax/drums duet much in the spirit of the critically acclaimed 'Which Way Is East', with Eric Harland emerging as worthy successor to the great Billy Higgins.

The interaction between Lloyd and Allen is particularly exciting. Lloyd knows how to pick his pianists, and Allen, who follows Jarrett, Michel Petrucciani and Bobo Stenson, acquits herself very well. She has her own devoted following, built up on the strength of her Blue Note albums.

Stanley Crouch, arguably the most influential jazz critic in America, as well as a novelist, playwright, and drummer, contributes colourful liner notes, almost a prose poem, to Lloyd's disc.

Recorded 2004

Personnel:

Charles Lloyd - (tenor and alto saxphones, taragato), Geri Allen - (piano), Robert Hurst - (double-bass), Eric Harland - (drums, percussion)
