The introduction eases you in to things, explaining how the book works and how to get the most out of it. Then we get in to the tasks: first Penny works you through the theme for that day, what you’ll need, what you should do and what you’ll get from it. At the end of each day’s chapter is your ‘money moment’ – a kind of summary or revelatory statement, plus a suggestion of alternatives if the main task doesn’t really apply to you.

The tasks come one day at a time, although you can pace them out a bit more than that. Some are easier than others, some will be more relevant and some won’t work for you at all, but everything is approached in a full-picture kind of way. Penny doesn’t just ask you to think about what you’re spending but also why and how you feel when doing it. It’s like having a good but sensible friend sit you down and say “we need to talk about your money” – a much better feeling than having a ‘financial expert’ preach at you.

Aimed at those who are not financially confident, this book must be used every day to gain the maximum benefit. Just reading it, or worse, speed-reading it will simply not work. You need to put in the time and do all the exercises to make tangible changes to your money situation. Exercises include activities like organising and filing your bills. When I shredded old bills (older than 6 years) I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

Block out some time in your calendar and go through the book, it's worth it. You will feel more in control of your finances. I think young adults and those who have been procrastinating getting their financial affairs in order would benefit greatly from this book.

Show those bills who's boss!
Highly recommended.

Just the kick up the backside anyone needs even if they think they are good with money. We can never stop learning about good habits and this is the perfect way to reappraise your habits. I like it because it is clear, simple and forthright. I found the filing the most helpful bit as I've been rubbish at it and suddenly it seemed simple again!
The whole point of this book is it is money (and time) well spent tackling the mundane but necessary assessment of your spending. The roundups are useful and again focus your attention on what you really want.
