I bought this book purely on the strengths of Julia's previous publications, but unfortunately it was most disappointing. Readers familiar with her books will find that the content lacks both substance and quality. It's uninspiring and the layout/presentation is in desperate need of an overhaul. One would have thought that a book bearing this title would cover all the basic recipes and techniques-not so it seems. In short, I would strongly recommend all amateur cooks and gourmet fanatics to stick to her other titles.

This is the first Julia Child book I have bought - and I acquired it because I understood it to be about basic techniques with plenty of helpful tips - based as it is on her own accumulated file of notes to herself. At this level, I think it is more than adequate and really quite helpful. So - a basic technique e.g. roasting is described in detail and then the elaboration of variations for different cuts, meats etc. And excellent index - one of the best I have seen in a cookery book - helps you to make maximum use of the contents. Not a "must have", perhaps, but certainly one to keep and use.

The book although used arrived in good condition. It provides many useful tips and is designed for quick reference and guidance when needed and in this it works well,The main drawback is that quantities are non metric and intended for the U.S. market so can cause some delay in cross referencing to values that are more familiar.

This is an interesting book. I was a big Julia Childs fan from her tv programme in the 60's. For someone interested in cookery which is a bit more complicated in it's methods this would be a good buy.
