and i was,and so began my collection of hers, have been to she her once in birmingham, and i am going stateside to hear her one more time.and all this because of this CD.
It is not her best by far,but you have to start at the begining to see how her music as changed for the better.
To pick a fav track would do the cd an injustist, but can i still play the cd today when need picking up and still does the trick.it is just.........you have to listern to all the cd to make your own mind up,but it`s worth 60mins of you time just to see what singing is all about.PASSION,and this lady has it all.
However, all the talk of the demos in the notes is a missed opportunity as it would be great to hear them and there is certainly enough space on the 25 track, 2 disc set. Though these first three reissues are beautifully annotated and all the 'released' material is present and correct, for the hardcore fan and collector we just have two songs over three albums which are new to cd, with nothing from the vaults. Sadly the compiler and the record company have missed a trick as these reissues are a missed opportunity, given there had to be demos, live work (the rest of the Radio Clyde gig, the Bbc in concert gig from 1989) and given it was the 80s, ridiculous unreleased mixes?
Brilliant music, brilliant artist still, looking forward to gigs in 2016.
Sitting down and properly listening to this remastered edition brought all of those memories back of first hearing this album all of those years ago. It still sounds so crisp and clear. The songwriting makes you realise what an absolute talent this girl is! It is not surprising she has often been referred to as one of the UK's best kept secrets in music circles.
Obvious stand out tracks are "Happy Ever After" and "Where Does The Time Go?". I'm so surprised they weren't bigger hits. The sparse piano track, "Invisible War" is simply amazing. I'm a little disappointed that the 'extras' on this package amount to a few live tracks and alternate mixes of the singles. Surely there is more in the vaults that could've bolstered this long overdue overhaul of a classic album? This re-issue still scores 5 stars for being an absolute belter of an album.
2nd album, Porcelain, has recently been re-issued which is another set of quality songs, expertly produced and written.
If you get a chance to see Julia live in 2016 please go and see her. Her and Grant Mitchell give 100% at every show I have ever been to.
I am constantly introducing new fans to her (hope that doesn't make me sound too Avid Merrion) and without exception they are coverts.
Do yourself a favour - try her! You won't be sorry.
Also as refreshing is Julia's attitude to the typical love song. For example, Julia's not afraid to write about what it really feels to leave someone, or to be left yourself! And does it in such a down to earth, "English" kind of way that you can (happily?) relate to.
Couldn't pick a favourite - they're all brilliant in different ways. When's the next release Julia? It's been too long.
My fave songs are my theme tune: "Where Does the Time Go?" on which Michael McDonald (ex Doobie Brothers) duets, and "Woman of the 80s" which still seems relevant even in the 90s!
Can't think who to compare her to - just try it out!
