It's 1970, October, Belfast deep in the troubles. My friend & I are two 15 year olds in his Cregagh Estate house with nowhere to go. His big brother has left an album in his room. An album with a cover of a naked woman covered in fruit - the stuff of adolescent dreams! We have our Guinness & Clan Dew - the nectar of paupers & we relocate the cover plus the album to my friend's record player.

And then it begins....

The classic (now legendary) Vertigo swirl spins & 'Mississippi Woman' kicks in. A staccato sprawl of anguished steel guitar from Glen Ross Campbell & THAT Ray Owen voice booming 'going back to Louisana'. Primal R&B from an English band! Next up Bo's 'Who do you love' & more searing, screaming steel guitar. Memories come flooding back now all these years on. The mantra of 'Are you satisfied', the chuggernaut of 'Train', more great vocals & wailing guitar on 'Nadine'. This truly remains a groove of an album!

For those in their 50's Juicy Lucy should be the welcome return of an old friend. For those of any age who like classic rock this is a cast iron 'must have'. Great cover, great music & great re-issue!

This mid-priced August 2010 UK CD from Esoteric Recordings (a Cherry Red label) reissues the debut album of one of Britain's great boogie bands - "Juicy Lucy" by JUICY LUCY.

Sandwiched between "Valentyne Suite" by Colosseum (VO 1) and "Chapter Three" by Manfred Mann (VO 3) - "Juicy Lucy" only the 2nd album ever released on the then fledgling progressive rock label 'Vertigo' (famous for its Spiral label design). This issue is 24-bit newly remastered by BEN WISEMAN at Audio Archiving in London (it was first put out by Repertoire in 1994) and features a relevant bonus track. It's also available digitally at [...]

Esoteric Recordings ECLEC2215 breaks down as follows (41:07 minutes):

Tracks 1 to 8 are the album "Juicy Lucy" released September 1969 in the UK on Vertigo VO 2 (874 901 VTY)

Track 9 is the non-album B-side to their debut 7" single "Who Do You Love" (Track 2 on Side 1). It was released 6 February 1970 in the UK on Vertigo V 1 and entered the UK singles chart in late March 1970 at number 28 - eventually rising to Number 14 in mid April. On the strength of that popular rocker, the album also belatedly charted in the UK in April 1970 - rising to Number 41.

The 5-piece featured RAY OWEN on Lead Vocals with GLENN ROSS CAMPBELL on Lead Guitar, Mandolin and Vocals [both ex The Misunderstood], NEIL HUBBARD on Guitars, CHRIS MERCER on Saxophones & Keyboards [ex John Mayall's Bluesbreakers], KEITH ELLIS on Bass & Vocals [ex Koobas and Van Der Graaf Generator] and PETE DOBSON on Drums and Percussion.

Just complementing my old vinyl with a more convenient CD version. Not a bad track on it, and contains classics given the Juicy Lucy treatment that will live with you for ever - e.g. 'Who do you love?' and 'Nadine'.

I'm afraid that, good though the remastering is, this is still an album featuring just one great track where it all came together and spawned their only hit (Bo Diddley's 'Who Do You Love'). The rest is just filler really. They never really took off, and remained in the 'second division' owing to a lack of killer original material.
