This stunning slipcased 6-disc box set of The Judi Dench Collection features eight stunning performances of star-studded BBC productions spanning four decades from the career of Academy Award-winning British actress Dame Judi Dench.
The collection ranges from Feydeau farce Keep an Eye on Amélie (1978) to Ibsen's Ghosts (1987) with Kenneth Branagh, Michael Gambon and Natasha Richardson. It features a version of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard 1981, as well as Talking to a Stranger (1966) described as the first authentic masterpiece written directly for television.
This selection of classic television plays also features Dench alongside Norman Wisdom and Fulton Mackay in Going Gently (1981) and Robert Hardy in Michael Frayns award-winning Make and Break.
Denchs later work is represented by Absolute Hell (1991) a role for which she won an Olivier Award and Can You Hear Me Thinking? (1990) in which she starred opposite her husband Michael Williams.
Dame Judi Dench is one of the most celebrated stars of stage and screen. She is the winner of an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, an unprecedented seven Olivier Awards, and numerous BAFTAs. At the BBC, she has appeared in a dazzling range of material from sitcoms to Shakespeare.

The productions contained within the collection are hugely variable in both style and content, and some have dated less well than others. However, watching Dame Judi's performance in each is a sharp reminder of why she is now regarded as one of the greatest actors of our time, both on screen and on stage. Considering the time span that this DVD collection covers, it is amazing that she has only become recognised on an international scale in the last decade.
This is not easy viewing. There is only one comedy, Feydeau's farce 'Keep an eye on Amelie' (perhaps Judi Dench's weakest role): the others are serious stuff. If you are looking for comfortable viewing each evening you will be disappointed. However if you are prepared to be challenged and made to think you will get a great deal of interest, I can't say pleasure, from this package. If you used to buy season tickets for your local repertory company (those were the days)then this might appeal. I consider it value for money if only because of the two classic plays for which I bought it.
How I wish we got more plays, rather than adaptations of novels on the television.
Each box set comes with a quick introductary booklet which gives you a quick bio & synopsis of each play/film.
