Format: Paperback
This is a pretty standard trip through Cursed Earth for Dredd. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with that - the dialogue is sometimes very witty ("hup, seven-sixteen-nine, we can't count but we can rhyme") for example, but the situations just feel well used. The encounters en route, the rookies shaping up or shipping out, you can't help feeling that it's all been done before.

There is a mix of styles in the artwork, some better than others. And some nice touches hidden away in the small print, as you'd expect. Hidden in amongst everything else there is a nice exchange about Demarcos and Dredd too, but this is pretty much the only real feeling that you are going to get that this is part of a wider ethos and a longer story. Oh there is a reference to some of the Origins stuff too. But the ending doesn't really grip you in the way that it could. Dredd beats the bad guys, end of.

Average Dredd though, is still worth a four in my book. And it is great to see it collected and printed in this way.

The cursed earth has always opened up the Judge Dredd world to madness, and this graphic novel does that brilliantly. An excellent story by judge dredd's creater ~ John Wagner. The novel is a great read and full of great art work.
