It is a fascinating multi-faceted book. Immediately the quality of prose stands out. Beautiful and memorable images grace almost every page, or else an anecdote that illustrates the social, geological or cultural nature of the area in which the traveller finds himself. There are too few travel writers who approach their subject on foot, and the reader is left with a residual sense of having shared the experience of the traveller, as much as they may be inspired to undertake such a trip themselves.
There is also however a sense of underlying change. That this sometimes remote corner of Spain is undergoing a transition before his very eyes and that his experience is something that will soon no longer be available to the traveller. This may also have political significance, but politics is largely left unspoken throughout the book. This is a memorable piece of travel writing that leaves the reader with a sense of dramatic catharsis.
