Top Customer Reviews

By Sid Nuncius #1 HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 21 Aug. 2008
Format: Audio CD
This is a truly excellent disc, and a very welcome re-release. In a recent Radio 3 Building a Library review by the excellent Tess Knighton (who is deeply knowledgeable and a very fine judge) this recording came out as the best overall. One can easily see why: the lower pitch allows top lines to be sung by countertenors giving a wonderful, rich, resonant sound without losing any of the detail of Josquin's superb writing, and the standard of singing by Ensemble Clément Jannequin is outstanding. They are firm and clear of line, bringing real life to the text and music and there are some sublime moments - the chordal passage at "Et incarnatus est" in the Credo, for example, is sung with such exquisite tenderness that it melts my heart every time I hear it.

The plainsong propers are sung by Ensemble Organum, a fabulous chant choir who are a world away from the soft-edged, watered-down plainchant packaged for the chill-out market. This is full-blooded, muscular organum chant of the sort designed to fill the vast space and overwhelm congregations in mediaeval and early renaissance Notre Dame and it's a thrilling and brilliant contrast to Josquin's polyphony. Together the two choirs create a truly memorable musical experience, and one to which I return time and again.

In Tess Knighton's review this disc just pipped the Tallis Scholars' landmark recording (now available as part of an excellent bargain double CD reissue Tallis Scholars Sing Josquin ) for first place. Unlike Ms. Knighton I do not have to choose a single recording of this great work, which is just as well because I own both this and the Tallis Scholars' recording, and I wouldn't be without either of them.

Most discs of Josquin's material labelled as a "Mass" contain only his polyphonic pieces for the Ordinary. No Propers. But then plainchant is boring, isn't it? Well no, actually. Here Josquin's "Pange lingua" mass, based upon an existing Corpus Christi hymn of that name which is given at the end of this disc, is presented with Propers for Corpus Christi, and it's a fabulous combination.

In the accompanying notes by Marcel Pérès, director of the ever-excellent Ensemble Organum who combine on this disc with Ensemble Clément Janequin, he states that, contrary to the common opinion of a decline of quality in plainchant after the Golden Age of the 12th century, in this era an "extreme slowness for the great days was chosen in order to permit the singers to profusely decorate, to 'florify', as the term 'florizare' put it, the Gregorian chant which it was desired to offer God with even greater brilliance on the occasion of exceptional feast days. Thus the drawn-out Gregorian melody [...] attained, thanks to the ornamentation which adorned the note like illumination in a manuscript transfigured the letter, to jubilatory summits of sacred singing. The Gregorian melody became new, with a newness that sprang forth out of the moment, the very moment of the liturgical occasion which set off better than any other moment the work of the Holy spirit."

Digipak with accompanying booklet with notes in French, English & German, plus lyrics for the Propers with translations in all three languages.

Whilst the singing on this disk is beautiful (I am a big fan of the Byzatine chanting of Ensemble organum), I wonder does the Byzantine chant really fit well with the josquin. My own view is that they are not quite complimentary and thus I would have preferred the disk to be one thing or the other but not conflated.
