A must purchase
on 15 August 2014 - Published on Amazon.com
In my top 5 lists of great composers, "The Divine Bohemian" deserves a much better reputation and more listening that he is getting Another unlucy sould dropped from the cannon. He was one of the 3 composers in the world to pass Padre Martini's school with highest honors and certification. Mozart was the other one! Gives you an idea how talented he was. You'll love eerything on this CD. You'll be pursuing his music like a musical hound dog as I am. I can't get enough of "The Divine Bohemian. Buy! Listen and see if you don't agree with me.

The Evolution of the Old Instrument Crowd
on 5 April 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
Over the past few decades I think the old instrument crowd has gone through about every possible aesthetic permutation imaginable. They collectively seem to have tried out every imaginable sonic effect, from the most offensive squawkiness that seemed like a finger in the air to the oldsters (a la the perverse Kujikens and Hogwood) , to a more suave but still incredibly bland diffusion (a la Mr. Savall.) Somehow...someway a few performers actually seem to make the curious aesthetic work to an extent. It never seems to be quite a total success, but occasionally the basic reading of the music is so powerful that the preciosity of the technique fades into the background. That is definitely the case with these fine performances. The readings of these works are very inspired. They makes them sound like bumptious and self-involved vortices of musical ideation. The fact they often suggests Mozart vaguely yet seem a world away, does not even cloy. There is a frenetic energy to the works in this performance which is somehow graceful, but makes the difference between these and Mozart's works compelling. The performance seems to emphasize what is uniquely fervid about the works, and that was clearly the right way to go with these clever, but not profound endeavors. I am sure Padre Martini was impressed when he saw the Bohemian's symphonic works like this, for they speak of their own fine craftiness in every bar. Simply put, they are better than most other symphonies of the period, except of course for Haydn and Mozart.

Another Myslivecek treasure
on 3 February 2006 - Published on Amazon.com
There must be a Myslivecek revival underway--and no wonder. His music is exquisite. This collection is something of a complement to the recent recording of symphonies done by the London Mozart Players. It includes fresh recordings of six symphonies found on that collection, plus a selection of opera overtures. The London Mozart Players used modern instruments, this ensemble uses historical instruments. It's hard to tell which rendition is better. The opera overtures are a special treat. They make you wish you were back in 18th-century Italy sitting in one of the theaters where Myslivecek's operas were performed. They are lively, harmonically imaginative, and full of beautiful moods and melodies. It's amazing that they have waited so long to be recorded. The question always comes up when listening to this recording: how much else of beauty did this composer produce that is still unavailable in modern recording?
