If you need to alter Joomla templates at all then they are scary. This book explains the structure brilliantly and lets you learn how to build up your own themes at the right pace with clear text and clear explanations all the way through. A great place to start if you want to take Joomla beyond using other people's templates.

Only about 20% at the start of the book is about CSS and HTML. And this is vital. How the previous reviewer expects to design Joomla templates without a good knowledge of these is beyond me.

This book gives a very detailed breakdown of the architecture of Joomla templates focused on 1.7 and 2.5. Angie Radtke is the author of the Joomla Beez templates and really knows her stuff. A must read for those web masters who are serious about modifying and constructing templates with best practice in mind.

As a fairly solid web designer with a good understanding of css + php I was a little disappointed by this book. For one thing its rather short. The other issue is that it doesn't show you how to develop joomla templates from scratch (though it does break down the template components roughly), instead it talks about adapting templates (ie the Beez) template which the author developed to suit your needs.
A lot of the book is based around altering css and sentences along the lines of "when you do x then y stops working so you do z to fix it" crop up a lot. More useful to the complete novice approaching web design from the Joomla standpoint than to the developer looking to offer more cms solutions.

As a Joomla user for the last 6 years and using other peoples free and paid templates I decided to learn to design myself, this book is a great help in learning about Joomla templates and how to design your own. The only problem I have with it is the version of Joomla its for 2.5 I would have thought the price and print date it would have been for Joomla 3 hence only 4 stars.
