Please do not (as I did) buy the other set of books ALSO FROM JOLLY PHONIC (Jolly Phonics Workbooks: Books 1-7 ) because they are small, black and white and very, very dull.
This set of books is colourful, apealing, full of stickers with stick games, packed with different activities. My daughter aged nearly three then three years old loved and loves these books.
How to use them? Best to get going with letter on as many levels as possible. We used a DVD called FUN WITH PHONICS (which is the BBC in conjunction with Jolly ish phonics). It has great animation for each letter which your kids will soon learn off buy heart. After a couple of months of that, my girl knew most of the letters (exept for some confussion with - p,b,d, which is always a bit difficult for kids in the begining). Once she knew her letters, these books came alive to her and she'll sit down with me for an hour with one.
There are also some wipe clean material out there to write/trace letters and words. Lots of wipe clean books (wright with a felt-tip then wipe off) are available, but the most popular at home has been small wipe clean cards. Why? Kids are smaller than us, at the table its hard to reach so far over to the top of a book whereas the cards all have words along the bottom, exactly where little hands can reach them.
This workbook is great as she has fun doing the stickers / colouring in and also I can slip in writing practice.
I am going to order Workbook 2 now - the first book has lasted about 6 weeks so I am going to pace it.
The idea of using stickers for tasks is very popular - much better than other books which just have a reward sticker at the end of the page.
We are looking to get more of these.
