Cinerama - John Peel Sessions - Cd

Amazon.co.uk

David Gedge has had a long and fruitful association with the John Peel Show and of course the legendary Peel Sessions. His other band, the Wedding Present, have recorded 11 sessions for the show since 1986, and this new compilation features some of the finest work from his latest project, the keyboard-led, Burt Bacharach-loving, Cinerama. Clearly something in the air at Maida Vale agrees with the singer. Alternative versions of songs from the first two Cinerama albums--a scorching "Maniac" and flute-tinted "146 Degrees"--nestle among some surprise bonus tracks, recorded at two special celebrations of John Peel's life. From an acoustic set recorded at Peel Acres, Sally Murrell sings gently on the Franco-pop "Pacific", and from Peel Night comes "Kerry Kerry" and a hard-edged "Hard Fast And Beautiful". David even throws in a laidback cover of "Elenore", how can you resist? --Jerry Thackray

Cinerama John Peel Sessions (BBC)
Taken from two studio sessions recorded for the John Peel's Radio 1 show, this album is released just in time for the bands latest tour. Interestingly there is a blend of all facets of the band which extend from the more energetic refrains of 'Comedienne' that hark back to ex-Wedding Present Gedge's roots to the refreshingly retro feel that is Cinerama, such as 'Kerry Kerry'. Interesting because Cinerama are finally playing some WP tracks, for the first time, on this UK tour.
To celebrate Peel's prolific 60 years, most of which have been dedicated to picking up unsupported new bands, that years ago included The Wedding Present, Cinerama performed a set at his home, 'Peel Acres'. Listen closely and you can detect a Peel-Gedge banter on the back of the graceful version of 'Dance, Girl, Dance' which responds elegantly to its acoustic treatment.
Sally Murrell's voice has blossomed from a stylish harmony to an enigmatic vocal that shares its rightful place besides Gedge's. Placing 'Hard, Fast and Beautiful' is a stroke of genius; now pressing replay for the most infectious chorus of a song ever, doesn't make me feel so guilty.

I am a relative new-comer to Cinerama, despite being a Wedding Present devotee in the days of their pomp, and beyond. All I can say is that they are a brilliant secret. This album contains some superb melodies - in particular the acoustic version of Dance Girl, Dance; the gloriously 60's groovyness of Honey Rider and the Orange-Juice sounding Comedienne. John Peel once said that Dave Gedge has written some of the finest love songs ever. He was right - and he's still writing them. Don't miss out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid compilation 25 April 2001
By Nathaniel M. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Following in the footsteps of THIS IS CINERAMA, this compilation of radio sessions and live performances may not be a good introduction to Gedge & Co. but makes for a nice alternative listening experience to the studio albums. The first session is a tad shaky, but things get better rapidly; "146 Degrees" and the amazing "Reel 2, Dialogue 2" (their most underrated B-side) are highlights, as is their lively cover of the Turtles' "Elenore." Audio quality is very good.

For fans of the band Cinerama, this is an excellent offering of Peel Session recordings. Great selection of material with outstanding performances and excellent sound quality. Also serves as a great introduction to the music of this fine band. Crafty, acoustic-based pop music from David Gedge (formerly of the Wedding Present).

1.0 out of 5 stars melodramatic! 18 April 2001
By K. Kenner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Drama queen David Gedge of The Wedding Present sings songs about love and broken relationships in his British accent. Most songs use some combination of male and female vocals, piano, organ, flute, and sometimes strings. The album did not speak to me, although most songs are catchy. The acoustic version of "Pacific" is nice, but the one of "Dance, Girl, Dance" is just BAD. The lyrics tend to be on the melodramatic side so it gets old real fast.
