Product Description

About the Author

Although John Kay (1742-1826) served his apprenticeship as a barber and followed this profession for many years in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, his consuming passion was observing and drawing the world around him. In 1785 he gave up his barber shop in Parliament Square to become a full-time sketcher and painter of miniatures, producing an estimated 900 portraits and caricatures over a long and prolific career.

Both volumes are huge & well bound & at 50 quid well worth it. The only disapointment is many of the printed plates of the etchings are so small & barely or less than a quarter volume of the page & I will have to use a magnifying glass to enlarge the detail, and the pages are A4 size as well. Maybe this was how they were originally shown on the day. There is much to read & it is the original text that the great Kay wrote. I live near Edinburgh & only found out about him thru the Simon Schama Face of Britain tv series. The original & still in business shop is still there in the Old Town & I will visit it. psbooks sent it well packed & was delivered in excellent condition by Hermes (they have improved!)
