THE JAZZ BASS BOOK - TECHNIQUE AND TRADITION BOOK WITH AUDIO ONLINE
Synopsis
This book is part player's manual, part historical profile, and part musical portrait. It explores in-depth all facets of jazz bass playing - from the development of "walking" and other techniques, to the human and musical interaction inside a rhythm section, to the bassists who made their instrument an integral part of America's greatest art form. Citing examples from key recordings in the jazz canon, the book defines the essence of the musical contributions made by every important jazz bassist. These achievements are explained both conceptually and technically, helping musicians and fans alike understand the art and craft of jazz bass playing. Bassists get expert guidance on mastering proper technique, practice methods, and improvisation, plus new insight into the theoretical and conceptual aspects of jazz. The companion CD featuring bass plus rhythm section allows readers to hear technical examples from the book, presented in slow and fast versions. It also offers play-along tracks of typical chord progressions.

The book looks great - no complaints whatsoever. However, if like me you were after the CD version just be aware that despite the book cover displayed here explicitly showing the CD version and many reviews referring to the CD version, the book that I received does not have the advertised CD and palms you off with "online media included" instead. Unfortunately, the seller does not recognise this misrepresentation as a "problem" and you will be lumbered with the return costs etc (and no book). So, if you're after the CD version (as I was), best look elsewhere for fulfilment.
Great book, very inspiring writing, but progresses a little bit too fast if you ask me. I'm an electric bass player of several years who swapped to the double, and it started off fine, but at a turn of the page I was really using some advanced knowledge I acquired from my years on the electric. THIS IS NOT NECESSARILY a bad thing! I did have the knowledge to swallow the book, but if you're a complete newbie, I'd definitely recommend something else for your own self learning guide! Get this maybe as a side read, or extension activities to drag your mind into the world of Jazz, but don't think this is a learner guide even if the very first few pages start from '0'.
This book is excellently written - concise and informative with just enough information to get you through it. The only problem I have is that I'm new to jazz and it keeps introducing me to new players and new music and I'll possibly need a new credit card soon with all the CDs I'm having to buy!
If you're a bass player (double or electric) and just starting out in Jazz, you'll love this book.
I am a working musician and found this book informative and interesting, I don't think you need to be able to play music to enjoy this publication. If your a fan of Jazz or music in general the text accompanied with the tracks on the CD make creative and interesting entertainment.
