Born in Brisbane Australia in 1949, I moved to London England in 1968 where I lived until 2000 and then moved to Sligo Ireland where I now live. My wife Sylvia and I have three grown-up children David, Stephanie and Jean Miles, the latter named after Jean Paul Sartre and Miles Davis, which may give you some insight into my political and cultural posture.
I was educated at Zillmere State School, Sandgate District State High School, West Ham Technical College, Walthamstow Technical College, Wolverton Technical College (HNC Electronic Engineering), Casio College (A Level Pure Maths), City University (B.Sc.(Hons) Computer Science), University of London Birkbeck College (M.Sc. Computer Science).
In Australia I was a Radio Technician at ABC radio stations 4QR 4QG VLM4 VLQ9 (Brisbane), and at stations in Brandon, Emerald and Eidsvold and also worked in a radio lab. These were my formative years, where I found out about the possibilities in life, and which ones I liked.
In England I worked as a lab technician for Philips, an instructor in Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and mini-computers at Bletchley Park and London Air Traffic Control Centre (LATCC) for the Civil Aviation Authority, the Open University (OU) as a database programmer, COMSHARE as a programmer of accounting systems, Microchip Applications Limited (joint venture with OU colleague) as a technical director where we designed and developed a very early (possibly the first) microprocessor controlled remote control central locking system for cars, lecturer in data processing in College of Data Processing (with/for City University colleague), Senior Lecturer in University of East London teaching database and AI on various B.Sc and M.Sc programmes, and as a part-time evening lecturer at Birkbeck College teaching systems analysis on the M.Sc Computer Science course.
In Ireland I work as a Lecturer on database on various degree courses.
I have written three books on database: Programming in SQL, The Relational Database, and Database Design and Programming (currently in its second edition).
My active interests include sailing, designing and flying model aircraft, aerial photography, electronics, mathematical programming, and political, philosophical and cultural blogging, and chatting with friends worldwide via Skype, Facebook, YouTube (BINKIE2000) and Twitter.
My more passive interests include music - Jazz, Classical, Rock and Pop, comedy and satire, and modern art and writing.
I have three websites - http://www.databasedesign.co.uk http://www.jcmath.net and http://www.radicaldebate.com
I am 61 and have lots of questions.
