This book reminds me in a way of 'Chocolate' and 'The Knitting Circle'
They all fit the same type of recipe or pattern.
A delightful read that I will no doubt want to read again.
Oh and try the recipe for Lemon Glories....

This had the potential to be a good story but Melanie's passivity combined with the lack of answers to what made the people in the story so very unlikeable made this book very dull indeed. Other writers have told similar stories with verve and excitement - this one managed none of that.

the book was ok but there was too much detail and not enough storyline and the end of the diary was a bit of an anti-climax quite dissapointed

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Writer! 14 Feb. 2012

I really struggled with this book at first, but that is not to say it was bad, it just wasn't for me. The author is an amazing writer! She is very talented and the book is deep and detailed. The problem for me is that I like more fast-paced and fun reads and this book is slow and serious. Every little thing is detailed to the extreme and, while some people may enjoy that kind of detail, as the mother of an infant I just don't have time for it. When Melanie first moves into the house I felt like I was watching paint dry. Every room in the huge house was described down to every last flower on the wallpaper and every single fleck of dust. I was about to give up entirely at 48% when, all of a sudden, something happened that intrigued me. I ended up finishing even though I skipped a lot of pages. To all future readers of Jocelyn's Journal, get your patience in gear and don't give up. It gets better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once upon a time 24 Jun. 2012

Once upon a time there was a young woman who had no spine. She was a people pleaser who did as she was told and in return received room and board at her parent's home in exchange for a deadly dull life where she counts down the days until she is theoretically old enough to die. And then suddenly, in the death of her own grand mother, she see's an escape, grabs it, and tries to forge a new life even though her mother and sister shortly follow to drag her back home. Along the way she meets many challenges, redefines "home" and uncovers a few family secrets that may bring unexpected and much needed healing.

This book is a hero's journey par excellence in which the protagonist must choose to separate and individuate or lead the life of the walking dead. It has gems of wisdom hidden along the journey, and although the author tells vs shows, thus breaking one of the premier rules of writing, it some how works with this story, thus leaving me feeling as if I had just read an adult fairytale. It's a fun read and I imagine could be inspiring to anyone facing similar challenges.

4.0 out of 5 stars And it comes with a cookie recipe at the end 13 Dec. 2012

It's unusual for a book in the Contemporary Literature genre to keep you on the edge of your seat, but this one does. Will our heroine be able to break away from her stifling family and make a life for herself? Or not? And what DID happen to Jocelyn??

There are editing failures in the Kindle edition but it's a good story with engaging characters, told with humor and compassion. And it comes with a cookie recipe at the end.

This was a good and well-written story with a good message. Everything was tied together in a very inventive way. I know that if I'd read it again, I'd pick up things I might have missed. So maybe I shall!
