Product Description

Review

This is a fascinating, brave and honest book. The author has every reason to stick to the Indian 'party line' on Jinnah and all his works, but he is courageous enough to examine the facts and arrive at his own conclusions. In his account of the last two years before independence, the only people to emerge with their reputations even half-way intact are Maulana Azad and Archibald Wavell. It's a sad story of an avoidable catastrophe that could have been avoided if enough people (mainly on the Nationalist side) had risen to the challenge. The author refuses to canonise or demonise the characters who appear. His assessments are, in the main, balanced, fair and with an inclination to be charitable. That even goes for Winston Churchill (a notorious bete noire for the Indians). That said, this is a book that is desperately in need of an editing it never received. At times, it is very hard to decipher just what point the author is trying to make. It is one of these books with a 'cast of thousands' where the reader is assumed to know who was who. The reader who doesn't soon becomes hopelessly lost. Is reading it worth the effort? This reviewer feels that he is a better and more informed person. So do take a deep breath and stick with it: it has its rewards. --by David McKee on 13 Nov. 2014

Jinnah has been an enigma for many. Initially he was a proponent of Hindu-Muslim unity but later abandoned this in favour of a separate Muslim state which became Pakistan. Ever since then, he has been demonised by Indian writers as the one who was responsible for the partition.

This book, from a BJP politician and an ex-Indian Minister, is a timely revisit by an Indian who tries to see beyond the simple politics of partition. The book asks questions which have been anathema to Indian writers and politicians in the past. The book asks difficult questions, and is objective enough to give it credibility.

A must read for readers interested in Indo-Pak history!!

I would put this book in the category as being one that should be read in conjunction with, and after, other books on the subject. Partition is a complicated subject with parties to the process being both good and bad but not necessarily consistent as either. There is plenty to be learned from this book but it isn't a stand alone tome on the subject.

After all the hype about this book in India,it proved to be a anti climax. The author perhaps tried to describe Jinnah in context of the partition & independence of the Indian subcontinent but lost track of his subject. It is however surprising that a learned political leader lacks the philosophical & intellectual depth in treating such an hugely historical subject and relying on just reporting events to fill in the blanks.
