As I grew up in the East End and lived in the Canning town Plaistow area I'd heard as everybody had about the exploits of the Tibbs family. The notoriety spread quickly but there was always somebody to say Jimmy Tibbs was a nice guy. The fact that he had some well known faces as friends added to his notoriety. As a boxing fan who's followed most of the fighters trained by Tibbs I had to read his story. I'm pleased his life has worked out so well and will continue to do so in the future. The book gives an insight to an honest man becoming embroiled in a family feud against his best intentions. Boxing fans and villains alike will enjoy this book. I'd recommend anybody who lived in the area at that time to read this book as well as boxing fans worldwide who respect Tibbs for the great trainer he turned out to be.

This is a testament of a man who encountered many adverse situations and much heartache. Although at times a harrowing tale, it is ultimately an inspirational one. Sparring with Life is a very well written account of someone battling through extremely tough encounters to go on to lead a highly successful, peaceful and fulfilling life to this very day. There is also a feeling of great warmth, humour and light to this book, depicting many examples of the healing powers that friendship, love and faith can bring to someone's life. The book is also a fascinating insight into of the world of boxing. What one man has achieved in the sport he is evidently so passionate about is absolutely phenomenal!

Jimmy Tibbs 'Sparring With Life' is a must read for all boxing fans.

Not only does the book tell the story of a talented boxer and boxing trainer, it also tells the story of a genuine and respectable East End bloke who has stared adversity in the face and fought back with fury.

I have read most boxing biographies published in the last 25 years and this is in my top 3. A great book that cleverly avoids the fault of many boxing bios of reeling off boxing statistics. The boxing elements are kept relevant. The handling of Jimmy Tibbs' religious beliefs is excellent and the book avoids the all too common cheap criticism of others without becoming PC which is very hard to achieve. I read this book in less than 24 hours and couldn't recommend it more.

Great read! Jimmy really fills this book with his heart and soul and it shows through chapters which encaptulate you as the reader. Jimmy talks in depth about his upbringing which really sets the scene for his characterand the rest of the book. This is one of the most honest and thought provoking books I have ever read. Maybe Jimmy could write another one in a few years!
