As someone going to jewellery making classes, I bought this because I thought it would be a useful gemstone reference book, but found it to be much more geared up to jewellery making, which was a really big surprise! It not only tells you how to buy the stones, but has lots of examples of how they are best used in actual jewellery. The photographs are really good - you can see what these stones are supposed to look like in real life. I'd recommend this for anyone doing jewellery who wants to buy and use gems. I've seen a few other gems books but this is by far the best.

Bought for a friend, she nearly didn't get it! Lovely clear photographs. Good descriptions and explanations about cut, clarity and colour of gems including natural green and yellow Diamonds and green Garnets. Groups that different gems belong to, hardness scale, where, and how, they are mined. Also how heat treatment is used to enhance colours. I can thoroughly recommend it.

Not good. Too simple. I found myself several times having to google things for more insight. It has allot of images and pictures but the actual information feels lacking and incomplete. I bought this book after reading allot of the reviews but with hindsight I noticed most people bought this book as a gift, so why they chose to make reviews having never read it I dont know?!

I have returned it.

All is in colour with wonderful photos of gemstones. Explanation of their groups and types and why some more of value than others. Also, when setting, which are more fragile right through to diamonds. I have enjoyed reading a lot of it and have it beside me to use as a reference when buying gemstones, and also because I love it. I had it renewed so many times from the library, and it broke my heart when it was reserved by another. So I have my own precious book now. I have learned so much from having this book.
