Jack Hillgate tells a saga of cinematic scope from the perspective of a believably ambiguous protagonist. Abe Goldstein is an opportunist, an actor on-stage and off, who pounces on an opportunity to escape from unemployment, advance his career, and make money in the process. Then he finds himself a Jew trapped in Nazi Germany under a false identity, enmeshed in the Nazi machinery, and participating in propaganda films to survive. What begins as an almost comic misadventure plunges ever deeper into moral ambiguity and the complexity of human choice. This book is at once a page-turner, a personal epic that will grab you from the beginning, and at the same time a deeply thoughtful drama. Hillgate is a writer who loves layers and recurrent images, parallels and concocted coincidences that nevertheless always ring true. Most of all, he writes from a perspective that invites readers to look closely and think again about what they read. Historically accurate and intricately plotted, this is novel that I recommend most highly.

The Jew with the Iron Cross
This really is a fantastic read. As a fan of historical fiction and anything to do with theatre or stage, this is a must read and totally original, with an English and Jewish actor goes to Germany on the promise of stardom, only to find the love of his life and war being declared he's trapped and now under contract to the Nazi Propaganda machine, the author handles all of the inevitable moral issues that arise with great style, this is a refreshing look at one of the most terrible periods in world history and well researched.
Highly Recommended.

I don't usually write a review on anything I buy but for this item I thought I should. This book is very good. It has a great cast of characters, is very well written and really makes you think about what life must have been like for the Jews in Nazi Germany during the war. It is also very well priced 77p is an absolute bargain for the Kindle.

I did however feel that the pace of the book was too quick. There were massive jumps in time firstly from 1939-1944 and then again another jump of some 20 years at the end. What happened in between those years is never properly explained. I also felt the author could have put more detail into the characters especially Eva. Also the plot did seem slightly implausibe as another reviewer has pointed out but most thrillers are. For all that though it is a thoroughly good read and well worth buying.

This fictional story, while based on true events ,is a story that could have happened. Very well researched it tells of an out of work British actor who is given a job in Germany just as the second world war breaks out. His Nazi employers do not realise he is in fact Jewish and becomes the Nazi's screen idol and is used for propoganda purposes.
This is a fast moving story that keeps the reader literally on the edge of their seat. This story opens up for examination the many flaws inherent in the Nazi regime.

The story idea, the plot itself, and much of the narrative are all very adequate. What spoils the tale is the lack of accurate research, which leads to the sort of anomaly found several times. Wartime Germany did not have Jeeps - they were American. Television cameras existed in few places in those days, and Germany wasn't one of them. I could go on, and on and on. PLEASE PROOFREAD!

I really enjoyed this book, it was easy to read and full of little twists.
The ending was a little strange and I haven't quite figured it out yet. This would make a super film. At only 77p it is also great value for money. Yes great chunks of time were coverd very quickly, but if you are prepared to believe that a non-driver could get into a car (a prototype to boot) and drive with no trouble, you have to let it all in. Most stories have little holes in them, but if you enjoy the story you overlook them.

What a pleasamt surprise. I found this book excellent reading although i could'nt imagine being in
the same position as the main character. When reading the book my thoughts dwelt from real life to
fiction. The torment our character had to endure being a officer in the German army and dealing with
the atrocities taking place whilst being a jew held me in high concentration. I fully recommend this
story to all Amazon readers. The strange thing was, how could Jack Hillgate's second book, namely
Cocaine be so disappointing. I'm afraid i didn't find so many references to drugs and drug dealers
appealing to me. However i give The Jew with the Iron Cross 5 stars.

It's 1930 and actor Abe Goldstein has just finished a run in Julius Caesar and is once more out of work. In a hurry to get to the pub and drown his sorrows, he doesn't even stop to remove the fake blood from his face. On the way, he stumbles across a couple of fascist thugs beating up an elderly German gentleman because they mistakenly believe he is a Jew. Half German and a Jew himself, Abe intervenes and seeing his bloody face, the two thugs run off. The grateful man turns out to be a film producer and over a drink, offers Abe a one movie deal to star in a film he's making at his studios in Germany. Abe is understandably concerned that though he doesn't look Jewish, he would be taking a big risk working in Hitler's pre-war Germany. His prospective employer Hans Bosendorf assures him that he will be quite safe working under an Aryan name and with a forged passport.
How Abe Goldstein becomes the Aryan Julius Schiller and eventually joins the SS and is awarded an Iron Cross makes for an exciting adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel but did spot a couple of historical errors.
When Abe's bloody stage make-up startles a `Chinaman', Abe muses that he must look like the Yorkshire Ripper on the prowl. Peter Sutcliiffe, aka the Yorkshire Ripper wasn't born until after the war and didn't begin his killing spree until 1969. I think the author has confused him with the notorious `Jack The Ripper' who prowled the East End in the 1880's.
Later in the novel Abe describes a gaggle of press photographers as `paparazzi'. This phrase was first coined in the 1960 film La Dolce Vita directed by Federico Fellini.

Neither of these historical bloopers detracts much from what is a very entertaining page-turner.
