(E.g: Jesus died on an upright "stauros"/stake and not a cross. The word "cross" was inserted into the Bible much later and its unscriptural use in worship stems from pagan Babylonia.)
However, that said, this is a well-crafted film and as enthralling now as I was when I first watched it on TV in the 70s.
It's also still as powerful today as it was 40 years ago; a testament to Robert Powell's charismatic Jesus, skilful, involving direction and the impressive cast of many great acting names of the day.
Furthermore, many scenes are still as gripping as I how remember them, beautifully enhanced by the wonderfully stirring, musical score with its recurrent haunting, evocative theme.
6 + hours of poignant, thought-provoking and spiritually uplifting viewing.
(PS: I know this may sound ridiculous, but just to remind potential purchasers, after watching part one on disk one, or part three on disc two, one has to wait for the next part to play automatically.
(Alternatively, go to the "episode" selector on the respective DVD's "home screen" to watch either part 2 or part 4.
(Some reviewers have even binned/given away their 2 DVDs, believing that the full 6+ hours playing time is not included - as I nearly did myself!)
Superb as a story. Superb acting. Excellent music.
Amazing if you have no knowledge of the story.
These days it would cost around $150 million to make this and I think it was the most expensive tv production ever back in 1976.
It does not date because it is set 2000 years ago.
If I have to criticise, then the story is far too kind to Judas and downplays the Bible description of betrayal for money - pure greed no more noble motive than financial gain. The actor playing Judas was too well loved from other roles to nail 'the man of perdition' who played the charity card to disguise his true nature. He was the prototype of the AntiChrist and there is still a production yet to be made which can accurately portray the worst baddie in history.
Really worth watching. An astonishing emotional ride.
It even states it is 374 mins on the DVD case. A bit annoyed as the is the 2nd time I've purchased it (different packaging) so I thought I was getting the non-edited version but I wasn't
In my view, this, Franco Zeffirelli's version, is the definitive film on the life-story of Jesus of Nazareth as we know it from the Bible. It is a beautifully shot and portrayed film, a gem. Anything that came before or after cannot hold a candle to it! All the very famous actors in the cast also make this a memorial to them. Once artists are dead, only sequences on film can bring them back to us and to later generations as they were in their prime. I also think that Olivia Hussey made such a wonderful Mary! A real delight to watch and I have always remembered it from when I first saw it in the 1970s, on TV, and am so glad to have been able to get a copy to enjoy again when I want to.
As to the film itself, well what can I say, just a "Wonderful" film.I always think of this as being the nearest to what actually happened. The resurrection of Lazarus is so powerful,so compassionate,it makes me proud to be a follower of Jesus Christ. He truly is the Son of God.
If you insist on total accuracy, this will not please you, but then again neither will any of the other versions. But as a means of encouragement it is really worth seeing
