I have owned this edition for nearly twenty years, having bought it second-hand and in near mint condition. I use it for both study and for the daily liturgical readings. Although I have noticed a number of typographical errors resulting in transposed or mis-spelt words, these don't detract from the joy of using this full edition of the great Jerusalem Bible, a truly inspiring translation of God's word. The extensive footnotes are more cautious and conservative than the equivalent edition of the New Jerusalem Bible. The footnotes in the NJB are sometimes rather sceptical in tone. The text of the JB Standard Edition was eventually re-set in a different typeface (the same used for the NJB Standard Edition) and incorporated amendments and corrections.

Users of this edition should be aware of an amendment to the end of Galatians 5.6. In the Reader's Edition this appears as: '....since in Christ Jesus whether you are circumcised or not makes no difference - what matters is faith that makes its power felt through love.' There may well be other variations from the later Reader's Edition but I haven't come across any as yet.

HASH(0x9712b614) out of 5 stars An Excellent Study Bible 11 Dec. 2014

Although I'm not Catholic, this Catholic translation is my personal favorite translation. Protestant readers should be aware it contains the Apocrypha.

Clear and concise English accurately reflects the original languages. Excellent footnotes help the reader understand references that would otherwise be invisible to modern readers. In an effort to more accurately portray the meaning from the original language, some verses are split between other verses. These are clearly labeled, but some people find this disconcerting. This edition has been out of print for some time. It is hard to find a Jerusalem Bible with the full footnotes, and you want the footnotes. People sometimes portray to The New Jerusalem Bible as a new edition of The Jerusalem Bible, but truly, it is a new translation. My preference is for the older translation.

The Bible was advertised as "used-like new condition", which was entirely accurate.

HASH(0x9712baa0) out of 5 stars I believe this may be the best English translation ever written 1 July 2015

I believe this may be the best English translation ever written, First translated from the early texts into French, Then translated again directly from the early texts into English, while compared with the French. the result is unique colloquialisms, and phrasing shifts that bring the actual scenes into sudden surprising vividness. VERY well researched. N.T. Wright reviewed a list of 10 or 12 modern English translations and "damning with faint praise" would describe a lot of them. Of this, he said: "One of the best, VERY good overall, in places brilliant, occasionally misleading". I like that, but I'll decide for myself if it's misleading thank you. This standard version supplies a LOT! more cultural background material than the readers edition and is harder to find I LOVE it! Don't mistake it for the NEW Jerusalem Bible, which is timid, bone dry, wordy, (like this review) and boring.

HASH(0x9712bddc) out of 5 stars The Best Reasearch Bible 21 Jan. 2015

If you are wanting and needing a more clear and indepth knowledge from a bible, then this is the bible to own.Dont be put off by the size. I have been excited and humbled to read an accurate bible history. Today many publishers omit and rewrite the bible to suit society and make money. I caution you to read the bible inbits entirety. You will enjoy it.I caution hard to see readers that this particular bible is lite faced in type making it more difficult to read. Search for a different publisher if you need a darker printing and larger type. I understand this bible as it is written and read many of the additional notes at the bottom to help with comprehending the text. I wish I had purchased this bible years ago. I look forward to unraveling the chapters each time I open it.

HASH(0x9712c010) out of 5 stars Excellent classic translation 31 Oct. 2014

Classic Catholic translation that is quite poetic and elegant. The regular edition has extensive notes that will appeal to the scholarly but can be ignored if not interested. One eccentricity, though. In the old testament God is called Yahweh, which is what the texts actually say. It took a little getting used to but I now prefer it as it is more accurate then the LORD is.
