Jerry A. Dowless, Jr., Andy to his friends, grew up on a family farm in Bladen County, North Carolina. As an undergraduate he attended Duke University, where he majored in English, History and Medieval and Renaissance Studies, receiving his BA in 1995. He then attended the PhD program of Rutgers University-New Brunswick, leaving with an MA in 2000. After living and working in New York, he attended the University of North Carolina School of Law, graduating with his JD in 2005. He has been a member of both the New York and North Carolina bars, and though he is currently retired from the practice of law in New York, he remains licensed to practice in North Carolina. Currently he is preoccupied with writing fiction and running his family's peach orchard.
