Initially, I have to admit that I fully expected this series to be yet another poor attempt at adapting the original novel. When I realised it was set in the modern day my expectations fell even further; updating a classic story usually only succeeds in lessening it's impact.
Well, after grudgingly watching episode one I was eating my words gleefully.
This is an astounding series which has incorporated the orginal tale as part of it's internal mythology then moved forward into a totally fresh storyline.
James Nesbitt's performance is absolutely dazzling. He steals the show (particularly as Hyde) and I love the way the transformation is more about his personality than external appearance, even with the beautifully subtle physical changes.
I saw the last episode on saturday and two days later I'm eagerly buying the DVD.

I'm so glad to have been so wrong.

Over the years there's been a couple of different attempts at adapting Jekyll and Hyde to television, and none have really worked that well mainly because everyone already knows that they're the same guy, it's part of the public consciousness and therefore doesn't make engaging viewing. Part of what makes this series so good is that it knows this and uses it to it's advantage.
Instead of following the story of the ill-fated 19th century doctor this series follows a modern day man called Jackman (Nesbit) who we first meet strapping himself into a complex series of restraints whilst talking to a private psyciatric nurse about 'him'. Jackman has begun to transform into a very different man, he seems to have the same problem as doctor Jekyll had but this time there's no magic potion, no control, Hyde just arrives. The two men communicate with each other via Dictaphone and the nurse has been hired to act as a carer/go-between for them. Nesbit of course plays both parts and manages to make the two men so different that there's never a moments confusion who is talking.
Jackman and Hyde both look very different as well, where Jackman is aging and clearly strained by his condition, Hyde is energetic, manic, violent. They have slightly different hair and - in a very simple but extremely effective move - different eyes courtesy of a pair of creepy black contact lenses. Despite the title this is Hyde's show all the way, Nesbit gives him such charisma and energy that he steals the show anytime he's on screen.
The plot of the series follows Jackman as he struggles to protect the world and his own family from Hyde whilst being hunted by some mysterious government agency who want Hyde for themselves.

Ok, I'm not usually the person to do reviews, but I watched Jeyll with no conceptions, my friend just lent it to me and I was like "Ok!"

I hadn't seen much of James Nesbit's work up to now but all I can say his range of acting was flawless. he captured the compassionate Jekyll and the frightening, multi-faceted Hyde so effortlessly I believed there were two people doing it.The filming is incredibly impressive, and Stepehen Moffat, the next Doctor Who writer should eb very pleased with his beauty of a programme. It can seem somewhat different the way the storywriters have approached it- however the fresh take is incredibly clever in weaving in characters that are truly enjoyable to watch ( and left me with my goosebumps that had goosebumps on them....) Well worth watching :)

Written by Steven Moffatt (of "coupling", "Dr Who" and "Sherlock" fame) this is the complete six episodes of the bbc series from 2007. A reworking of the Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde story by Robert Louis Stevenson, this one is set in modern London, with James Nesbitt as Dr Tom Jackman. The series begins with him locking himself up and hiding away from his family, as he tries to understand and control, his alter ego, or "him", as he describes "Hyde", who has recently begun to emerge.
It is a clever reworking of the tale, with Jackman' alter ego, learning of "The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" and deciding to take Hyde's name. Nesbitt is very good, both as the weary, timid Dr Jackman and ever better as the wild eyed, lecherous, violent put playful Hyde. The physical transformation is subtle but unmistakeable also ( a change in the hair, the posture, but also in the use of contact lenses, which make Hyde's eyes completely black, giving him the inhuman look of a toy.
During the six episodes, Jackman/Hyde and his family, are pursued by a shady government agency, who want Hyde for themselves. There is some terrific interplay between Hyde and Jackman's wife (Gina Bellman), who seems intrigued and somewhat attracted to her husbands new dangerous dark side. You look forward to Hyde's appearances more and more, as Jackman seems to visibly wilt as the story progresses. Highly recommended.
The DVD also contains audio commentaries on episodes one and six, and a documentary, retelling the Jekyll tale.

I remember watching this when it originally aired and i remember loving it at the time, but after watching it again after i purchased it i realised just how brilliant it actually was.

I love James Nesbitt anyway, but you can really see his acting talent in this as he portrays both Jekyll and Hyde with superb individuality. Each character has it's own persona despite being played by the same actor.

It's shocking, scary, funny and heartfelt at times, and despite Hyde being the 'bad guy', you can't help but fall in love with him. Steven Moffat really shows off his writing ability. It is different to the original story, which i read after watching this, but it is equally as thrilling, if not more so!

I loved it!
