Review

Well known for her passion for art, exciting techniques and love of colour, Jean takes you on an inspirational painting journey in which you'll encounter, amongst other things, magical watercolour flow, glorious washes, sunbursts, and a magnificent 'hotting it up' finale. Light and the use of beautiful colour along with the ability to take any ordinary subject and turn it into an extraordinary painting with consistently unique results is what many artists aspire to achieve. Furthermore Jean has the ability to install enthusiasm and inspirational motivation in all around her.-Wey Gallery --Wey Gallery

A truly inspirational book! Beautifully and sensitively written, readers will no doubt identify with the author's early days, as she coped with criticism and destructive remarks most often offered by people who know everything about nothing and nothing about everything!
For many years I have tried loosening up my watercolour technique to little avail, but after reading through only a few chapters, by following the author's advice on brush control and admiring her incredible watercolour sketches in the book, my own flower sketches have taken on a new life. When some professional artist friends commented on the improvement they see in my recent sketches, then something must be going right, thanks to the tutoring in Jean Haines' book!
A must-have reference book for all aspiring water-colourists, whether they paint flowers, landscapes or whatever.

I am at the moment on holiday in France and have been painting every day after reading Atmospheric Watercolours. It is truly the most inspirational, exciting and comprenhensive book on ANYTHING I have ever read. The love of painting Jean manages to breathe into the book is amazing and the paintings are treasures in themselves.
I would recommend this book to anyone; and particularly to those who are facing the dreaded painter's block.

This book is not like any other watercolour book that I own - and I own quite a number! It provides inspiration on many different levels, not only for painting but for life in general. Jean is generous with her tips and always encouraging to the anxious would-be artist. She shares her many years of experience gleaned from many countries of the world most generously. Her unique way of tackling any subject is liberating and fun. I defy anyone not to be inspired by this wonderful book.
By reading this book, not only will you be sent "racing for your brushes", but you will perhaps gain a whole new way of looking at life. Atmospheric Watercolours could change your life! It is a truly beautiful and inspirational book, one that I know I am going to read time and time again.

Nothing short of fantastic. I first fell in love with Jean's work when she wrote 'Colour and Light in Watercolour', I thought it was wonderful and still do. Yet with this new book, we've moved on ten steps ahead. You have to buy this book if you are remotely interested in watercolour. Known as a difficult medium to master, Jean shares her knowledge and style so that we can learn and improve. Her loose style won't be to everyone's taste, but you don't know until you try it. Painting this ways liberates your art. The book covers many subjects including flowers, portraits and animals so it has wide appeal. It will take you from first steps yet is still suitable for experienced watercolorists. I love it. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.

What a beautiful inspiring book. I am hoping to be able to paint like Jean Haines loose but have such a fantastic result. A brilliant book to buy and read even if you do not follow the exercises it should inspire you to have a go at loose painting.

This book only arrived this morning and I have only had a chance to quickly flick through it but I can hear the author talking the words to me as I am reading them - The book is Jean - it is an honest and transparent view of how she thinks, how she paints, and how she inspires with no holds barred. The quotes are inspirational and very mindful.

No painting book can be the same from now on - this book sets a new bar for artists who write books where quite often 'a miracle' happens in their demos between the penultimate and the final picture of a painting which they call a 'few finishing touches'!

This book emanates inspiration and invokes an 'I can do it' response! Brilliant.

Well haven't finished it yet but am savouring every page!!!! It's stopped me eating and sleeping a good thing maybe???

Haven't done a book review before (and after reading this you may think "hope she never does one again!!!!" and maybe I should wait until it's finished but am just a lot excited about this one!!!!! It is full of Jean's secrets written in her own easy, inimitable, encouraging way, as if she is talking intimately to you, the reader. She shares moments and memories of her past..... a lovely insight into the Jean we don't get to hear about.....

I have done the first few exercises in the book following just what she did and guess what?????? They turned out and I think the penny might finally be dropping. If any of you have been lucky enough to either see Jean demonstrate or go to a workshop, she makes things look so easy.... well we all know it isn't... right????

Easy comes from years of practice, experience and desire, but.... and this is what I really want to share, this book opens the door and certainly for me has given me those all so sought after glimpses of what I'm looking for...... that's why I was so excited about it and apart from everything else, retiring, exhibition on Saturday, holiday next Wednesday etc etc....... well you can now understand why I couldn't sleep. I said to my husband at 3:30 I think I might get up... he said "What are you going to do.... paint?" Of course I said no....... hmmmm thought she indignantly does he really think I was going to get up and paint at 3:30 in the morning, how ridiculous!!!!!! Am beginning to think he knows me too well (note to self... need to become more mysterious!!!
