CD Jazzmatazz (Streetsoul) Virgin Records America, Inc., 7243 8 50188 2 4, 2000, 16 Track

Amazon.co.uk

Guru's Jazzmatazz Streetsoulis the third in the Gang Starr MC's genre-shifting project. Musicianship has always been at the forefront of the Jazzmatazzethos, so it's surprising that Guru has chosen to focus on voices this time around, choosing instead to work with neo-soul/R&B singers like Donell Jones and global talent like Les Nubians. After the lacklustre New Reality, Streetsoulis well-equipped to re-establish Guru's status as the overseer of a sweltering array of late-night grooves, heavily spiked with string bass, freaky deaky percussion and slinky vocal contributions. Led by Angie Stone's deeply funky appearance on "Keep Your Worries", Guru blends the swooning vocals of Erykah Badu with lounge rhythms on "Plenty", gets weird with Kelis on "Supa Love" and participates on a militant lyrical mission with The Roots. Elsewhere, Common's singer, Bilal, keeps the mood high and expansive with "I testify"-style R&B, British star Craig David holds his own on "No More" and Macy Gray leaves her child-like scrawl all over the plaintive "All I Said". Most of this album is too abstract to classify as a standard sing-a-long. This is partly down to the production by Guru and the Neptunes, where the vocals are utilised as backing to Guru's raps. However Jazzmatazz Streetsoulis an impressive effort to re-establish modern soul's ties with its glorious past as well as reaffirming it's connection to a hip-hop present. --Maxine Kabuubi

I bought this album a couple of months ago beacause I couldn't wait for the single 'Keep your worries' to be out in the shops. Once I saw who was featured on the album I had to have it but I now rate it as one of the best CDs in my collection. I have gone out and bought the other 2 albums and also bought albums by Erykah Badu (great) and Les Nubians (fantastically chilled-out)as well as having some record by almost all of the other artists already. Anyone who loves hip-hop, soul or R & B will love this album. It's diversity is shown on tracks like Erykah Badu's 'Plenty', with her beautiful 50s style singing to the more poppy 'No More'. 'Who's there' with Les Nubians is simply a work of absolute genius. A top album, buy it now. If vol.1 was a classic rap album, this beats it by a mile.

I bought this album on a bit of a whim and out of sheer love for keep your worries- the album did not disapoint! Heres a quick rundown of my favourites:
Keep your worries: brilliant! Angie sings well as always and the rap is pure poetry.
Hustlin' daze: This one grew on me it's very soft hip-hop old style and Donell Jones' voice is really smooth.
All I said: I'm not usually a Macy fan but this one grew on me and the beat is phat!
Certified: my absolute fav. The beat is wicked, Bilal is ace and the chorus is so soulful. It's feel good soul and such a singalong, tap your feet track. Really catchy!!
Plenty: What can I say this one oozes class and highlights the jazz element. Its fun & sexy and Badu is awesome.
No more: I love this, it's a dancey/ r&b track and Craig David sounds as good as ever if not better!
Mashin' up da world: I have only just started to really love this, its gritty but not all drugs and pimps, a really strong message.
Overall I love Guru's style and his choice of artist on all the songs is spot on(Issac Hayes Nigh vission is the funniest track) some of the artists I hadn't heard about before but this album got me interested (Bilal for example) I also love Guru's voice it is understandable and masculin but not too terrifying like Ja-rule & Busta rhymes.
A MUST BUY. A rare rap album that most people wouldn't object to (the worst curse, although used quite regularly, is s*it) Listen to the words, he doesn't just moan about the world & the ghettos and then go on about hoes and how much money he has, like some commercial rappers, but discusses the issues and it isn't violent either.

I bought this album yesterday and have been listening to it a fair ammount. Being a fan of rap Ive loved this for its excellently deep and skillful lyricism. The tunes havn't appealed to me quite so much but alot of them I still really like listening to. Almost anyone could get into this album as it has so many forms of art and music in one album. This is a very good example of an album that was made with alot of effort. Even fans of wu tang clan and other hardcore rappers (like myself) should still love this album. It is a must have for fans of hiphop and may be very popular with fans of other kinds of music too. Well worth your money.

The Guru does it again with Jazzmatazz vol.3., a welcome sequel to the previous two albums. This is the kind of album you could play during get-togethers with friends or during an intimate moment with your lover...its eclectic tunes will be classics and will be played for years to come in bars accross the country, you have to add this to your collection! Craig David adds a quality track with 'no more' as does Kelis, Macy Gray and many, many more..even the intro is impressive!

I adore The Guru

This is the 3rd in 4 Jazzmatazz albums. The first one, more than 20 years old, is my all time favourite album, my Desert Island disc!

But this one gives it a run for its money. With the jazz vibe, whatever the lyrics, there's an undercurrent of hot and sleazy.

If you buy 1, buy the original Jazzmatazz but if you have a spare few quid, you can't go far wrong with this.

Guru represents once again. His choice of artists on this Jazzmatazz album was well planned.I must give props to Erykah Badu, The Roots, Angie Stone, Ameil, and of course the beautiful multi-talented Les Nubiens. The entire album comes together like a genuine master piece... If you have always been a fan of Guru or any of the people featured on this album this is a must GRAB IMMEDIATELY! With a little R&B and a little touch of The Roots and Les Nubiens french flava this album will not let you down.
