Product Description

Product Description

Les Paul, born in 1915 was not only a superb guitar player whose prowess with the instrument alone would have gained him a place in musical history, but also an innovative guitar designer and technician.
In fact he is perhaps better known as the inventor of the Gibson Les Paul solid body guitar as "modelled" by the likes of Paul McCartney and Slash!
Starting his career playing a more country orientated music he moved on to his jazz style in the 1940's playing with the likes of Art Tatum, Willie Smith, Billy May, Lionel Hampton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Nat King Cole, Illinois Jaquet, and J.J.Johnson all of whom are featured here on this superbly re-mastered double CD.
For Collectors attention this disc also uses the original Armed Forces Radio Services broadcasts and for the very first time the AFRS's announcements are also included!
Remarkably Les Paul is still alive, now well into his nineties but still musically active and as influential as ever, a true musical icon in an age when there are not many of them left.
Settle back and enjoy a genius at work!

Top Customer Reviews

By Barry McCanna TOP 500 REVIEWER on 14 Jun. 2008
Format: Audio CD
This reissue presents the guitar innovator in a variety of jazz settings, all dating from the mid-forties. The bulk of the first CD is taken up by the July 1944 AFRS concert from Los Angeles, complete with announcements. The line-up included Nat "King" Cole (who sings Sweet Lorraine), trumpeter Shorty Sherock, and Illinois Jacquet and Jack McVea on tenor, with trombonist J.J.Johnson joining on the last four tracks, where Sherock drops out. Be warned that the latter's contributions rely heavily upon the stratospheric register, but if you enjoy the excitement of a live performance you'll not be disappointed.

Elsewhere, recordings by Les Paul's Trio are interspersed by groupings with Art Tatum, the Eddie Heywood Sextet, Lionel Hampton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Willie Smith & his Orchestra, and a guitar trio of Barney Kessel, Irving Ashby, and Arv Garrison at an AFRS Jubilee show. Throughout, Les Paul tailors his virtuosity to his surroundings, sound quality is excellent, and the result is very satisfying.

This album presents Les Paul in a less familiar role - that of an innovative modern jazz guitarist before the multi tracking took over. All the tracks date from the mid 1940s and are steeped in nostalgia. The concert recorded at the Philharmonic in Los Angeles which makes up most of the first CD is excellent and is spoiled only by the insane squeals and honks perpetrated by tenorist Illinois Jacquet to whip up a certain section of the crowd which is a shame because he is otherwise an accomplished player. The second CD is even better containing, in addition to tracks by his trio, tracks in which Les plays with musicians of the calibre of Eddie Heywood, Lionel Hampton, Willie Smith and Sid Catlett. These CDs show what a fine jazz guitarist Les Paul was (and remained when given the opportunity.)

Les Paul and Mary Ford. Over thirteen going on seventy one years, purchased my first Les Paul 78rpm back in 1954 when I had my first record player. I have never forgotten the wonderful music of Les Paul and again never will. I have now started buying CD's of the great music of the Master my memories are not only of the pleasure of obtaining those large vinyl discs but with the wonder of modern technology it brings the sound's of Les Paul right up to the fantastic sound that it should be.

A collection of Les with various bands that were broadcast in the mid 1940's, including his trio. Wonderful jazz guitar parts, in days before he got into using effects, very lively. The sound of these cd's is very good, as is the quality of the material and the musicianship. I'll play this for fun cos it is so enjoyable to listen to, as well as a good period study for players. Highly recommended.
