I find it unbelievable that Andre Benichou's work here, named Jazz Guitar Bach, is not well known. This is an astonishing recording which finds the virtuoso French guitarist playing plenty of Bach's groovy keyboard works. Apparently released in 1970, causing a sensation at the time, this recordings is now 43 years old but make no mistake this is true Bach, but on a jazz guitar. This recording made me think of plenty of other antipodean artists such as Isao Tomita and those who perform Bach on the moog. That is, the mood is very electric and switched on - even futuristic and minimalist - but here we stay somewhat more grounded. Benichou is such a fabulous guitarist that he manages to convey the original depth of Bach's work with a workmanlike swagger. I think that fact that this interpretation works so well, being at once loyal to the original compositions, despite the guitar not being able to express the range of a piano or harpsichord or indeed a clavichord, it manages to go to an even more organic niche to express the works with great poignancy. You can really witness how transcendent Bach's music is - and Benichou and his team have decorated these masterpieces with their own personal inspiration. Its only a shame that the tracks are so short as they seem to end once they have got going, although this is not a short album being over an hour long. But I must admit this is some of the best Bach playing I have ever heard - the true sound of the towering genius is abundantly clear in this recording. Benichou also exhibits very controlled playing and seems to sweep you along in his compelling and lyrical journey. Not to be missed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz Guitar Bach - Andre Benichou 1 Aug. 2001
By Grant Porter - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD is all that and more folks. For those of you who are familiar with his 1970s album under the same title with the Eduard Sorel caricature of Bach playing the electric guitar on the album cover, this collection contains all of those classic recordings as well as eight other out-takes from that era that weren't on the original Nonesuch recording.
Additionally, there are five more wothwhile modern arrangements which include synthesiser in what appears to be an attempt to adapt to todays European club sound and market. The most notable of the newer tracks is the finale - an arrangement of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor which is very well done. The album begins and ends with the newer Benichou recordings. I had to skip over the first two tracks on the album to get to the classic sounds I was looking for from the original recording. The original tracks are contained in the middle.
For those who are not familiar with this recording and who love Bach and play lead guitar - This is a must-have-recording. Finally on CD, I can lay to rest my original vinyl recording which I spent hours with lifting the needle up and down learning guitar and bass lines. I learned several of the pieces from that album in the 70's, committed them to memory and still remember and play them today. Next to a couple Beatles records, I don't think there is any other record that I spent more time learning from. Do not hesitate to spend a few extra dollars for this import to tap into one of the most compelling guitar recordings of the 20th century. Add it to your cart now!

This was one of my favorite "Albums" as a kid. Long out of print, I was thrilled to find it again. As of this writing there's another version still available at Amazon plus an MP3 download. I could do without the extra tracks that weren't on the original Nonesuch LP, but they can always be skipped over. If you like Bach and jazz guitar you can't go wrong with this.

Exquisite rendering of some of J.S. Bach's music. Relevant even in this tech heavy age.
