Don’t be deceived by the sleek, lightweight and portable design of v-JAYS. Because, while tweaking the speakers for the v-JAYS we realised we were about to unleash a monster. These are the hardest hitting pair of headphones you’ll have ever heard.

Light as air

The robust and collapsible v-JAYS weigh in at a mere 59 grams (2.08 oz) making them one of the lightest headphones in their class. The result is portable, high-performance sound at a mid price point.

The v-JAYS contain two folding joints which enables them to easily fit into your pocket whilst out and about.

Pure music; Pure fun.

The v-JAYS are designed for maximum music enjoyment. The speakers deliver a superior bass impact without overwhelming the other frequencies, meaning all the small details you often miss with other headphones remain intact. It’s time to remind yourself what it is you love about your favourite bands; whether you’re into heavy rock, RnB or singer-songwriter music - you’ll be moving to the beat in no time!

Collapsible and ergonomic

The v-JAYS contain two folding joints which enables them to easily fit into your pocket whilst out and about. Additionally we also mounted each speaker unit on ball joints, allowing a tilt of up to 40 degrees, guaranteeing in-ear comfort when on the go.

Customised 40mm mylar speaker

The substantial depth of sound delivered by the v-JAYS headphones is the result of two 40mm Mylar speakers. These speakers are finely tuned to create a really heavy bass impact but at the same time they retain all the subtle detail you expect as well as a high overall performance quality. The core construction utilises a powerful Neodymium magnet and a copper clad aluminum coil. The impedance is as low as 24 Ohm making these speakers extremely powerful – so use them wisely!

The v-JAYS come with a spare pair of foam cushions which will help your headphones last longer and one iPhone compatible 70cm extension cable.

Sound explained

Sound pressure, decibel and Hz

Sound is an invisible vibration composed of frequencies which travel in undulations known as sound waves. The amplitude of vibration produced by an object such as a speaker driver is proportional to the change of pressure generated as the wave moves through the medium which surrounds it (such as air). Therefore, the amplitude of a sound wave is commonly measured by its pressure level.

The decibel is a non-dimensional, logarithmic scale to denote a relative change in the strength of a signal or wave. When placed in the context of sound pressure level; it measures the nominal threshold of human hearing, relative to the quietest sound audible to the human ear.

The frequency of instances where a sound wave reaches its peak during a period of time is measured in Hz (hertz). This is the number of complete cycles per second. Human hearing is limited to frequencies between about 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.

Sensitivity and impedance

Earphone sensitivity is measured in Sound Pressure Level (SPL). This is essentially a measurement of how loud or easily driven a pair of earphones is. The sensitivity is also influenced by the drivers’ coil impedance which varies over the frequency range. The higher the SPL and the lower the impedance the more easily driven your earphones will be.

The robust and collapsible v-JAYS weigh in at a mere 59 grams (2.08 oz) making them one of the lightest headphones in their class.

I upgraded to these from my old Koss Porta Pro (hereby abbreviated 'KPP'). My first impression was that the V-Jays are less bassy and (much) more emphasized in the mids and highs compared to my KPP. Since most people reading this review will be very interested in the bass reproduction of this headphone, I will start with that.

(1) Bass:

The V-Jays are definitely not bass-heavy. On the contrary, they are quite bass-neutral, perhaps tilting slightly into 'bass-lite' territory, although they certainly do not sound 'thin'; the bass quantity of the V-Jays is appropriate for most music genres, but will probably be unsatisfactory for hip-hop and some techno music. What is more interesting than the bass quantity, however, is its quality: the V-Jays obey the age-old adage of 'quality over quantity' by offering a tight, punchy bass, as opposed to one which is 'loose and boomy' as is found on e.g. Beats, KPP, etc., and consequently do rather well with faster genres of music like [some pop], rock, metal and electronica. For listening to metal while jogging, I cannot think of a better headphone at the moment, except the Sennheiser HD-25 (of course), but that is in an entirely different price-range.

(2) Mids & soundstage:

The mids on the V-Jays are quite emphasized, and the high mids in particular may sometimes come across as slightly *too* emphasized. This effect is especially noticeable when listening to recordings where the V-Jays' considerable z-axis soundstage compression de-emphasizes the distance between the listener and the vocalist.

These really are exceptional value with audio performance beating expensive closed back headphones. They sound far better than you have a right to expect for £30! If you are thinking of getting some expensive headphones, you may want to get some of these first (or some Final Audio Piano Forte IIs) so that you have a VERY GOOD reference point. I don't think you will find ANY closed back phones that will beat them and you will have to pay way over £100 to get any open back 'phones sounding better. These are simple, cheap and basic, and they look it, but they sound terrific. You will easily find 'phones which look better if that is all you really want.

They are fairly accurate with no glaring flaws and are very revealing for such cheap headphones. The player you use will therefore make a big difference to the sound you hear. I listen mainly to classical music and believe that the v-Jays give a pretty fair representation of the tonal balance I hear in real life. There is just a minor exaggeration of the HF & LF giving them a gentle 'V' shaped sound spectrum.

As they are plenty good enough to reveal the shortcomings of poor players (and poor recordings), they will of course sound different with different players. I have tried them with various players and list the following popular players in ascending order:

1. iPhone 5. A surprisingly good sound but, in comparison with the players below, the v-Jays show up the iPhone's shortcomings of soft bass, limited detail and limited 'air' or space around the instruments.

2. Sansa Clip Zip. A step up from the iPhone. I got the impression that the v-Jays were extracting everything possible from the excellent little Sansa.

I have these over two months. And they are great...at least. Very light, very comfortable (I wear them 5-6 hours everyday).
The great surprise is the sound quality: it is impressive. Very natural, clear and crisp sound - just listen to some high-quality guitar or jazz song and you'll sense the difference. An they are loud - I have to keep the volume of my laptop around 20-30% max.

This is the third pair of portable headphones I have written a review for in my quest to find the best value at around the £30 to £40 mark. First the good points. These produce the best sound by a fair margin compared to the AKG K430 followed by the Sennhesier PX100 ii. The sound is crystal clear and open with a decent punchy tuneful bass. I just ran the equaliser 'flat' on my Sansa clip which is a first for any the headphones on this device. The cord is substantial and comes with a useful extension (which for some reason is finished in a slightly less substantial plug). They do leak sound but that is the price for an open natural sound stage. On the downside they feel cheap and plastic, the build quality is not up to the standard of the other two. The adjustment is a bit of a faff but once sorted produces a reasonably comfortable fit. The foam pads are a little thin but they do come with a spare pair. The 'fold' is only just worth it, the ear pieces do not rotate flat and stick out a bit so I do not think they will stand up to too much abuse. It would have helped if a carry case was included, but it is not. Overall they are good because they deliver where it is important, the sound.
