I assumed this was a single defective Jaybird X3 unit. However after getting a replacement unit, it had the same issue.
The issue occurred on both units straight out of the box, and was not resolved by factory resets. I was pairing with an iPhone 6s, running iOS 10. The hissing was also audible for several seconds when turning the headphones on, even when my phones Bluetooth was off.
I previously used the Jaybird X2s on a daily basis for over a year and a half and never noticed any static / white noise / hissing. I was a big fan of the Jaybird X2s and wanted to enjoy this product as much as the previous generation.
If anyone from Jaybird reads this, is this a known issue with a faulty batch? If so I would consider buying a new pair when the issue is resolved. Otherwise I think I need to look elsewhere.
In terms of the build, these are very solid. I've had them for 6 months and they still feel quite durable. Sweat or light rain won't be a problem as there are no exposed areas or ports (with the exception of the ear bud where the driver sits, although I'm not sure if there's a mesh to protect it from water droplets). The flat cables don't get tangled, and nothing has split or frayed. The in-line controls also feel durable and clicky, and are easy to reach. The only problem is when the buds are hanging around your neck. Because the controls are on the right hand side, the weight is unevenly distributed and they can slide off if you're not careful (although you can use the included clip to make sure they stay in place).
In terms of sound quality, I really like these. The frequency response out of the box is a little bass-heavy, but the Jaybird MySound app allows you to customise it, set your own sound profile, or use community-created ones. For earphones, these sound pretty good and I use them when commuting as well as working out.
The battery life is also decent. I tend to get around 6-8 hours of use before they need charging, and they only take around an hour to fully charge. But be weary of the voice that indicates the battery percentage. Every 20% it says (loudly) "Battery X%" and startles me sometimes. The proprietary adapter you need to charge it is a bit of a pain, especially if you lose it. But I can why they designed it that way, as it adds to the water resistance by removing the exposed port.
For connectivity, the earphones are easy to pair via Bluetooth. However, sometimes I connect them to my phone (Android) and music won't play. So I have to disconnect and reconnect them to fix the problems. Dropouts can also be a bit of a pain. They don't happen that often, but if I have my phone in my pocket and turn my head far enough to the right, the connection to the in line remote (presumably also where the wireless receiver is) can be interrupted because my head is in the way. But if I have phone on a desk, this isn't an issue and I can get a few metres of range.
Overall, I think these are a good pair of Bluetooth earphones and probably one of the best out there (which other tech reviewers will corroborate). The positives definitely outweigh the mostly nit-picky negatives.
To sum up, the good:
- Great build quality, sufficiently sweat/water resistant
- Great sound once you tune the frequency response to your liking
- Decent battery life
- Proprietary adapter, which can be a pain if you lose it
- The voice assistant is a little loud sometimes
- Connection dropouts in certain situations
Now to the crux of the review - the rating. I have only had the Jaybird X3s for a week, so there are some elements I can't rate such as lasting durability at this early stage. There is only one reason (very important one) I have given 4/5 stars, which has been provided at the end of the below list.
5/5 - Sound - Amazing for the price and the Jaybird app lets you customise the equaliser to no end. So many presets to choose from, which is brilliant and adds to the user experience. At just under 50% volume, my eyeballs become a set of speakers and start shaking when using a hi-bass present.
5/5 - Noise reduction - While it's not listed as a USP, you can't hear any surrounding noise. It is dangerous when riding a bike in traffic, snowboarding down a crowded piste etc. but at work, home or gym, it's a great additional feature.
5/5 - Connectivity - No issues so far and haven't experienced any drop-out on calls or when playing from Spotify on the iPhone.
5/5 - Battery Life - Currently using them from 8am - 6pm and ending the day with 20% battery charge. At this stage, 10 hours is a decent battery span and could be able to get another 2 hours at a push. However, all depends on the quality of the inbuilt battery.
5/5 - Construction - The wiring and earphone units are lightweight and feel they could handle a bit of tough love. I understand now why they're classed in the sports category.
5/5 - Accessories - Loads of flexible earpieces and other stuff.
4/5 - In-ear Comfort - Now, this is where I have to hold back a star and not give 5/5. I have tried different combinations of in-ear accessories and fitting positions, but the wing mouldings and shaping of earphone buds do cause a bit of pain after about an hour or so of use. I will point out that I have particually small ears. It has only been a week of constant use, so perhaps there is another combination I have yet to discover. If I do find the ultimate fit which eliminates the current pain, I will revise the review and pop on another star.

Terrible build quality however for sports headphones that are 'sweat resistant/sweat proof'.Read more
