Bluetooth range is weird, it can go one floor down but it can lose signal standing right next to the source with just tilting my head.
Battery life is what you'd expect from such a small headset, around 4 hours with 50% volume.
Something that I didn't even bother checking in the specs is the absence of aptx protocol, haven't decided if it's a good or bad thing yet but it's a feature that is standard in so many other rival headsets. Will have to get back to you.
My only true gripe is the quality of the accessories and the absence of earhooks as a substitute to the bundled flaps. The clip that's supposed to keep the headset attached to your shirt broke after 5-6 uses in my house since I haven't had time to test them outside.
The sound quality is pretty good. The EQ app has a load of different profiles, but just find one you like and leave it on.
Sound isolation is good. I don't have to crank the volume up to hear it on a noisy train.
The charger is proprietary, so that's one more thing to try not to lose. You can only buy spare chargers with a £10 accessory pack, but to be fair, you'll probably need all the extras because these earphones seem to be specifically designed to eat them. The earbuds come off really easily; I've lost three in as many months. The shirt clip sprang apart and was lost in the second month.
The sound is average, not really detailed but it's loud and the dedicated app with the equalizer helps but still it's nothing impressive. Cheaper Bluetooth headsets have the same sound.
As other have already said the pin used to charge it is very annoying because you need it to carry it everywhere and without it it's impossible to charge it. A simple micro usb port would have been much better.
The battery life is very good though, can listen to music for hours without need to charge it and the microphone for phone calls is good. I haven't had any problem during a call and the other caller could clearly hear me.
I'm still having great problem with the fitting, I've tried the different sizes and materials of the tips and fins but still I have to constantly adjust them during a simple treadmill run.
Overall is an average product that would have been great if sold at 50/60 Pounds but with a price tag of over 100 pounds it's not worth it. I wouldn't by it again.
In terms of the build, these are very solid. I've had them for 6 months and they still feel quite durable. Sweat or light rain won't be a problem as there are no exposed areas or ports (with the exception of the ear bud where the driver sits, although I'm not sure if there's a mesh to protect it from water droplets). The flat cables don't get tangled, and nothing has split or frayed. The in-line controls also feel durable and clicky, and are easy to reach. The only problem is when the buds are hanging around your neck. Because the controls are on the right hand side, the weight is unevenly distributed and they can slide off if you're not careful (although you can use the included clip to make sure they stay in place).
In terms of sound quality, I really like these. The frequency response out of the box is a little bass-heavy, but the Jaybird MySound app allows you to customise it, set your own sound profile, or use community-created ones. For earphones, these sound pretty good and I use them when commuting as well as working out.
The battery life is also decent. I tend to get around 6-8 hours of use before they need charging, and they only take around an hour to fully charge. But be weary of the voice that indicates the battery percentage. Every 20% it says (loudly) "Battery X%" and startles me sometimes. The proprietary adapter you need to charge it is a bit of a pain, especially if you lose it. But I can why they designed it that way, as it adds to the water resistance by removing the exposed port.
For connectivity, the earphones are easy to pair via Bluetooth. However, sometimes I connect them to my phone (Android) and music won't play. So I have to disconnect and reconnect them to fix the problems. Dropouts can also be a bit of a pain. They don't happen that often, but if I have my phone in my pocket and turn my head far enough to the right, the connection to the in line remote (presumably also where the wireless receiver is) can be interrupted because my head is in the way. But if I have phone on a desk, this isn't an issue and I can get a few metres of range.
Overall, I think these are a good pair of Bluetooth earphones and probably one of the best out there (which other tech reviewers will corroborate). The positives definitely outweigh the mostly nit-picky negatives.
To sum up, the good:
- Great build quality, sufficiently sweat/water resistant
- Great sound once you tune the frequency response to your liking
- Decent battery life
- Proprietary adapter, which can be a pain if you lose it
- The voice assistant is a little loud sometimes
- Connection dropouts in certain situations
It's worth trying all the different ear tips to see which one works for you the best.
And for my fellow bass heads - I can confirm the bass is awesome.
All in all I’d strongly recommend to anyone looking for a high quality set of Bluetooth earbuds or looking to upgrade from previous Jaybird models.
I would recommend using silicone tips at the gym as these won't deteriorate!
