After writing to Nick Mannion at Wiley Publishing last week I'm happy to say my copy was promptly replaced with a new hard cover copy. I can safely say the response has been five-star.
As someone who has done a fair amount of programming I found the book easy to follow, although the nature of the material means there is a fair amount of theory to take on board before you can do anything useful. For those starting programming there are some useful and well-illustrated pages explaining basic programming concepts.
The accompanying website has the code snippets for download but if there is any additional content, I haven't found it. I would have liked to have seen more there - after all, its what the book is about - and I would still have splashed out for the paper copy.
I hope Jon Duckett is planning more books. I'd buy one on Java.
Only four stars because the binding of the book is desperately poor. After a week a chunk of pages started coming out. Returning to Amazon for a swap and I hope to be luckier with the next one. I wonder if the hardback version suffers from the same problem.
The only thing I can knock about this book is the binding. I ordered mine late March and received not long after. Towards the middle of May the book began to fall apart; pages were falling out one by one or even as a chunk. I tried to ignore it but every time I put it in my bag another page came out and was creased. However, I got in contact with Amazon and without hesitation they sent me a brand new one with free express delivery. Quick reminder as to why we all use Amazon so much!
Overall, great book for beginner programmers. Work through it bit by bit and you will learn in no time!
Having "Looked Inside" all the other JS books on sale here (literally all of them), and having been dismayed by the awful old-school style of layout (huge wide paragraphs, no color coding, very poor side notes....) ... I am genuinely delighted to see this book is full of colour, and has a really modern layout to present the content. A great job from both the Author and the Publisher.
This book isn't the sort of book you need to read from page 1 to understand later sections, it's more of a reference and guide. You want to do something, find the chapter/section and give it a read.
By far the BEST web based book I've purchased thus far.
