Product Description

Debut studio album by the American R&B singer, featuring the hit singles 'Whatcha Say' and 'In My Head'.

BBC Review

BBC chart blog critic Fraser McAlpine summarised baby-faced American-Haitian RnB superstar Jason Derülo thusly, in a review of his single In My Head: “(he) is basically a one-man Lynx advert, where the version of reality he would most like to see happen is straight out of a 14-year-old boy's ideal of what girls are really like.”

If it wasn’t for the desire to get at least somewhere close to a rough-guide word count, we could just leave things there. This is music that rings shrilly with a deafening hollowness, an unashamed fakery akin to a dream-state where fantasy and reality have become mixed and hopelessly muddied. In Derülo’s world, the everyday is always a neat place to be, with saucy encounters only a shopping trip away and where every conversation is characterised by completely ridiculous Auto-Tune’d vocoder vocals.

Honestly, was nobody paying attention when Jay-Z released Death of Auto-Tune? That’s Jay-Z… y’know, the massively successful hip hop star who artists like Derülo should look up to as an example of an outsider overcoming the majority on largely his own terms. When Jay-Z releases an album, critics care; when he releases a single, the download-guzzling public go crazy for it. He’s harnessed a difficult dichotomy – mainstream acceptance and the respect of music writers who used to determine what was hot, and what was absolutely not.

Assessed on such old-school terms, this self-titled album is as hot as the frozen chicken fillets that’ve been sitting in the bottom of your freezer since you cancelled that barbecue at the last minute in the summer of 2006. You should chuck them out, really, but they’re lodged in there whether you like it or not. Again, a parallel presents itself: as undeniably terrible as these songs are, a select few do bore in deeply, albeit against one’s wishes.

Which, to an extent, is the sign of a fine pop song. On the other hand, the Crazy Frog did okay for himself (himself, right? He had a ding-a-ling, didn’t he?), and that song ranks among the ‘Greatest’ Pop Abominations Ever. So, yes, Whatcha Say – which rips both Imogen Heap and a not-particularly-funny Saturday Night Live sketch – and In My Head have a certain catchiness to them, and What If and Blind raise unintentional smiles. But all sorts of diseases are catchy, too, and just like Derülo’s debut album, you want rid of them as soon as possible. --Mike Diver

I got the CD today, and i must say i really like it.There are plenty of good songs in the similar R&B/Pop style of his two singles Whatcha say and In my head. The album may be short(only ten songs),but for me its not short on quality.

We bought this CD whilst we were on holidays and played it many time in the CD player of the rental car. My son (12 years old) chose it and I lvoe it as well. I often play it at home and in my car. Jason has a great voice, even though he likes to announce his songs with ...Jason Derulo... but we forgive him: he needs the publicity with a debut album. Very good music and lyrics, which combined with the voice and presentation make this album a winner.

I look forward ot hearing ther next album from his very promising singer and am keeping an eye out for it. I personally think it is good to buy the entire CD to see what Jasonh can dleiver. If you buy just one MP3 download, you are missing out! Highly recommended.

I've always wanted to get Jason Derulo's debut album ever since it came out, but I never got around to doing that. I'm quite happy that I did in the end. There are so many songs that bring back memories of my old friends, school and family, etc. I didn't give it the full 5 stars as I think, there are a few irrelevant tracks in the album, for example the French version of "Watcha Say", as there is already the original and the acoustic version.

Jason De Rulo is certainly a bright prospect with some soulful and enlightening words advocating his perspective on love. This album has three pre released songs- the first three in the track lisiting which have begun to pall as prior to this album I had already downloaded off ITunes and listened to them so often that they had begun to grate although all three are fantastic songs. However the other songs are also worthwhile and all have catchy beats and strong lyrics. Jason is particularly strong on Fallen where he sings about other famous couples like Beyonce and Jay and Michelle and Barack Obama to emphasise his love and adoration for his girl and Encore where he begs a girl for a further sexual liaison or "encore". What If is his particular stand out track though with its soulful and melodic lyrics and tune. This album is a must have for any R&B fan and at just 10 tracks every cut stands out and there is no filler. Jason may fade into obscurity yet but this album is a triumph.

Jason Derulo's self titles first album is a great album, it's not as catchy as his newer material and it may be a short album but it's great easy listening all the way through, a nice mix of upbeat songs and slowed down music.

I bought this album as I have liked everything that's been in the charts and I wasn't disappointed at all. I really love it. The only thing I would say is that the fact that he sings his name in every single song kind of spoils it a little, as it makes it sounds a bit naff after the first twice he does it. However his voice is amazing and his songs uplifting and I would definitely recommend this album without hesitation.

Featuring many of Jason Derulo's main hits, if you like his music, you'll like this!
Particular favourites are Encore and Spotlight (Bonus Track). The music is quite similar to the previous songs but its easy listening. Dont forget also, as almost EVERY song reminds us, it's not Jason Derulo; it's JAAYSON DERUUUULO!
