This JAPONESQUE eye shadow palette is simply stunning. I actually audibly gasped when I pulled it out of the box. It's GORGEOUS. The box is a show piece, and three of the four shadows are beautifully shimmery. At first I was a little disappointed because when applying the shadow it didn't seem to have much hue to it and appeared to be far less bright than I thought they'd be. However, after a full ten hours of wear, they the colors looked EXACTLY the same as when I applied them! I was really impressed with the longevity of the colors. So, to be honest, that's a pretty good trade-off, as I have no need to look like I'm going clubbing, but I DO want my eyeshadow to stay put all day long.
One draw back, which I know is common to higher end eye shadow, it does not come with an applicator, so make sure you have one or a makeup brush handy if you purchase this. But who doesn't, right?! Overall a great, beautiful, and durable product that I would certainly purchase in the future!
I was sent the (D'OMBRES A PAUPIERES) which is listed as 02. The quad consists of 4 colors in the brown/gold family. Two of the color choices had more of a shimmery look. You can apply the shadow lightly or put it on in layers for a more dramatic look. I felt that you needed to apply at least 2 layers before the nuances of the color became apparent. This compact did not come with an applicator, which was unusual, however, not a concern for me, as I usually use my fingertips. I thought the shadow glided smoothly across my lids, crease and brow area. The choice of colors appeared perfect for each of those areas and I was pleased with the final result. Did the shadow last any longer than the $8.99 drugstore brands, probably not. I would recommend this product and would consider other colors in the blue or green family.
There are four eye powder eye shadow colors in the compact. There is a warm, cocoa brown color that has a matte finish. The other 3 shadows are metallic and include a light gold color, a coppery bronze color and a medium brown. The shades are subtle enough that with my coloring, they are suitable for daytime wear.
The powder is silky and glides on effortlessly for me with no dragging. There is no applicator included but I always throw them away anyway. I apply my eyeshadow with the tip of my little finger.
I haven't had any problem with this shadow settling into the crease of my eyelid like some shadows do.
The compact is beautifully designed to resemble Japanese black lacquer with purple, light blue and green, free-form splashes of color on the top. It's square and also has a mirror inside for checking your makeup on the go.
My only issue with this product is the price. It's more than I would likely pay for eye shadow but that's just me. However, if I found it on sale, I would definitely buy this shadow set when I use this up.
It's hard to tell from the photo, but the 02 shade set is a lovely mix of taupe and purple-y browns, and the colors make my green eyes pop. (For color reference, I'm pretty fair and wear MAC foundation in NW20 or Bare Minerals in Fairly Light; I have green eyes and auburn-brown hair.) The upper right color is similar to MAC's Woodwinked, and the bottom left color is this gorgeous purple-y brown that is very unique. However, they have a very chalky texture and are hard to apply; even with my Urban Decay primer underneath, I had a hard time getting these to show up, and had to add multiple layers.
The case on this is also so pretty. You can barely see it in the photo, but the upper lid is a unique design that adds a richness to the feel of this. The entire inside of the lid is also a mirror, which makes this perfect for travel or on-the-go touch-ups.
Overall, I feel like this is a mediocre product, and am honestly surprised by how much it costs. For the same price, you'd be better off building a custom palette at MAC or Inglot, or buying one of Urban Decay's smaller palettes.
Combining some matte colors with the glittery colors makes it easy to dress your eye make-up up or down with this one palette.
I haven’t used this brand before, but I have to say I like the colors and I like how smoothly the shadow applies and blends. Although I do like it, I can’t say I would buy it myself when the drugstore brand work just as well at a fourth of the price that Japonesque charges for this one.
The eye shadow kit comes with a mirror built in, but doesn’t contain any applicators, which surprised me. I don’t think I’ve ever had an eye shadow that didn’t provide applicators before. This isn’t really a problem for me, since I use my eye brushes to apply the shadow anyway, but it is worth pointing out to other customers who might miss them.
